I mean, how do you not?
The Beat pulled a few sections from a Sundance Film Festival “Smart Works” panel with Momoa and others, and after we listened it turns out the actor interacted with a 74-year-old female comic book fan.
Momoa was initially asked by the panel about his secretive casting.
Well, things are going to be a little different. When I first went in I met with Zack [Snyder]. His idea is pretty amazing. When I went in, he told me – my jaw kind of dropped. My jaw doesn’t normally drop. What he has planned for the DC world and definitely for Aquaman is something that, you know – I think I was brought on for a certain reason and they got some really cool plans for him. I’m excited for everyone to see it but I really can’t… Last year, when I was on this panel I was like eating chicken breasts and in training when I wasn’t supposed to talk about anything. I wasn’t supposed to say anything until 2016. So I told a bunch of people that they could punch me in the face if I was on it, so I’m going to get hit a couple times. But they finally released it. I was supposed to keep it a secret for 3 years.
You may recall the news first breaking back in June of 2014 and Momoa having to dance around talking about it when on talk shows. The leader of the talk happened to mention Michael Shannon (General Zod from Man of Steel) was wearing an Aquaman t-shirt around Sundance… and Momoa very quickly changed the subject to talk about representation in his TV show The Red Road. Interesting.
Then a fan in the audience had a question “I have the very first Aquaman comic book because Aquaman was my very favorite character. Now, Jason, is Aquaman going to have a beard or mustache in this movie?”
“I mean, just going off what you’ve seen so far ma’am, I don’t think he is going to be blonde or white,” Momoa replied. “I can’t really tell you because I haven’t shot it yet. I hate to disappoint. But um, you know, I’m a little different than what those others… I hope you watch it with an open heart. I went to school for marine biology, it’s a real honor to play this.” He also referenced Kahului Maui, Hawaiian gods as coinciding with the story of superheroes.
The woman then added, “Well you mentioned the word honor, and I’m going to say, at 74 years of age I cannot wait to see the movie.”
Momoa got flustered just then and said, “Oh man, I’m sweating! I hope you like it!” She got in one last word, though—”I want to see you after!”
