Trump critic Cyndi Lauper has a surprising philosophy behind working with artists with opposing political beliefs

The privilege of choice.

Cyndi Lauper is speaking out about her choice to work with artists who hold different political views. According to PEOPLE, the legendary pop star remains firm in her stance against canceling people. Her recent comments come in the light of her collaboration with rapper Nicki Minaj. Minaj is a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump.

Lauper allowed the rapper to sample her iconic song Girls Just Want to Have Fun. The song appeared as Pink Friday Girls on a project by the rapper. Lauper and Minaj even performed the song together during the Pink Friday 2 World Tour in 2024. Lauper shared these thoughts during an interview with The Guardian. She expressed that she holds no regrets about the partnership. She noted that she does not believe in cancellation at all.

The musician also highlighted the political nature of her own hit song. “The fact that she did Girls Just Want to Have Fun musically – it’s a political thing anyway, babes. Girls just want to have fun. They’re entitled to a joyful experience in this world. Like it or not, we’re here. We’re not going out in the rice fields any more. Yes, rise up and put your foot down, and she did. I don’t know what she’s doing now. But I still don’t think you cancel people, because otherwise there’s no room for discussion.”

Lauper reiterated her refusal to cancel people

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer admitted she does not track Minaj’s current activities. However, she emphasized her refusal to cancel people. She believes there is no room for discussion otherwise. Lauper previously appeared on The Celebrity Apprentice in 2010. The show was hosted by Donald Trump at the time.

Lauper now feels open to working with people across the political spectrum. Her philosophy is quite simple and direct for the industry. She said, “If you want people to listen to you, you need to listen to people. If you don’t let people evolve, what are you doing?”

This perspective stands in contrast to the current political climate. Minaj has become a major figure in the orbit of the administration. The rapper recently participated in the Million Dollar Pitch Competition. This event was announced by the Small Business Administration, headed by Kelly Loeffler. The competition features the rapper as a judge.

Former actor Dean Cain serves as the host for the series. Minaj had expressed her excitement about the project on X. She wrote that she was looking forward to it and was proud of being part of the initiative to support small businesses.

The relationship between Minaj and Trump has grown stronger over time

Trump recently introduced the rapper at a Rose Garden event in July. He described her as a person respected by everybody. He also called her a great friend of common sense. The president stated that she has real talent.

According to Complex, Minaj also visited the Oval Office recently for an official engagement. A video of the meeting circulated on social media platforms. Trump greeted the rapper by calling her his favorite. He noted that she had been with him for a long time.

Minaj later saw a clip of this interaction on X. She responded by reaffirming her loyalty to the president. She wrote that she is not going anywhere and that she is right where she needs to be. This public show of support marks a significant shift for the performer.

The rapper had previously criticized the immigration policies of the president in 2018. She spoke out against the separation of migrant families at that time. Minaj drew from her personal history as an immigrant to the United States. “I came to this country as an illegal immigrant @ 5 years old. I can’t imagine the horror of being in a strange place & having my parents stripped away from me at the age of 5,” she wrote on Facebook at the time.

The rapper has continued to attend various events at the White House

Minaj appeared alongside Trump in January for an investment initiative promoting Trump accounts for children. Her presence at these events highlights a new chapter in her career. Many observers view this shift as a notable departure from her past views. Despite this, Lauper remains committed to her own path of open dialogue. She prefers to focus on the music and the human connection.

Lauper is currently preparing for a new residency in Las Vegas. The shows will take place at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. The schedule includes dates in February and September 2027. Fans can access presale tickets right now. This residency marks another milestone for the long-time icon who continues to navigate the music industry on her own terms.

Lauper’s approach to collaboration remains focused on growth and listening. She believes that choosing to engage rather than turn away is the best way to move forward. Her lack of interest in the culture of exclusion shows her willingness to bridge divides through art.
