‘Is this correct?’: Woman orders $14 of Dunkin’ Donuts. Then gets confused when they tell her the cost for a receipt

Although federal law does not mandate it, businesses typically issue receipts to customers free of charge when a purchase is made. With technology, traditional paper receipts have even evolved into digital copies. But for one woman, her request for a receipt at a Dunkin’ Donuts came with an unexpected price tag that left her extremely confused.
“This message is for Dunkin’ Donuts. This does not seem correct. […] Can somebody please send help?” YourTikTokSister (@yourtiktocksister) said in a video on TikTok. YourTikTokSister, who described herself as “not a frequent shopper” at Dunkin’ Donuts, bought a couple of lattes at the popular coffee chain after a friend made the recommendation.
YourTikTokSister said she ordered $14 worth of drinks and requested a copy of her receipt. She clarified that her request was not to dispute the transaction, as she wasn’t even informed what the total for her order was. Rather, it was so she could scan it using Fetch, an app that lets users earn points for gift cards by submitting receipts.
Dunkin’ Donuts allegedly charges 50 cents apiece
When the employee handed YourTikTokSister her card back after paying, the TikToker noted that she wasn’t given a receipt. “When he handed me my card back, he didn’t hand me a receipt,” she said. “So I ask, ‘Can I please have the receipt?’”
YourTikTokSister quickly learned that getting a Dunkin’ Donuts receipt had a cost. “I’m sorry, ma’am. They are 50 cents apiece,” the employee said, according to YourTikTokSister. As it’s not the norm to have to pay for a receipt, YourTikTokSister said she tried asking again in case the employee heard her wrong.
“Maybe he didn’t understand what I was asking for,” YourTikTokSister said. “I said, ‘No, no, no. I just wanted a receipt.’” The employee, however, gave the same response and said it was store policy. “Yeah, my boss says we have to charge 50 cents if the customer wants a receipt,” the employee allegedly told YourTikTokSister.
Understandably, YourTikTokSister was left in disbelief. “Sir… wait. Dunkin’ Donuts, is this correct?” she asked the company. “This cannot be correct. I’m confused. Is this proper protocol for here?”
Viewers were left confused
Reflecting on the situation, she claimed she was “hightailing it back to Tim Hortons” as she refused to spend an extra 50 cents just for a receipt. She noted that she had already spent $14 on two drinks and wanted the “25 points on Fetch for my receipt.”
Viewers were equally baffled that a receipt now comes with a price. Many expressed their doubts over the legality of such an act. “I question the legality of charging for a recite [sic],” a comment said. Some believe that an employee might be trying to gather receipts for Fetch as well, saying, “My guess is there’s someone in the store that scans all the receipts into Fetch.”
Others, however, theorize that someone might be adding hidden charges. “If they never gave you a total at any point in time and then refused to give you the receipt while asking you for an additional $.50 they skimmed something and overcharged you,” a commenter said. Another added, “NOOOOO, ITS NOT PROPER!!! they auto print, they stealing money.”
Whether Dunkin’ Donuts is actually charging for receipts remains unclear, as no similar claims made by other customers can be found.
