Han Solo Movie Co-Director Talks About What Makes Han So Compelling

Chris Miller and Phil Lord are taking the movie industry by storm with The LEGO Movie‘s success, involvement in the upcoming Flash movie, directing the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology movie, and an upcoming Spider-Man animated film. Somewhere in between all that work, they found time to talk a little bit about those upcoming projects to someone aside from each other.

In an interview with IGN, Miller talked about the struggle to keep expectations and the legacy of as huge a character as Han Solo in mind while not being stifled by them, saying,

Oh man, that’s our big challenge, right? It’s a huge pressure.

So we’ve definitely got that motivation and then the rest of it is about trying to give audiences a fresh experience that doesn’t feel like you’re just trying to check off some checklist of beats that you’re expecting and make something that feels new and exciting for people, but at the same time honoring what was so great about that character.

And like any other respectable nerd, they’ve got plenty of their own love for Han to add to the pressure:

I could talk to you for a day about why he is the perfect blend of rogue-ish cowboy… Morally ambiguous, but has a clear moral compass. He’s funny, he’s off the cuff… When I was a kid on the playground, fights were about who got to play Han Solo. He’s just one of the best characters ever created.

Meanwhile, Miller also mentioned that—like the in-progress live action Spider-Man reboot—their upcoming animated take on Spidey won’t be “just another Peter Parker origin story” and will in fact be “totally unique and different and not like anything you’ve seen.”

We can certainly think of a Spider-Man story that would fit that bill…

And that leaves us extremely excited. Miller couldn’t give any additional hints, but we sure hope he was talking about Miles Morales getting a chance at his own movie.
