New Report Says Felicity Jones Taking Lead Over Tatiana Maslany in Star Wars

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.

Last week Total Geek had a source who told them Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany had nabbed the lead role in Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars film. We had a source tell us the same. However, now The Hollywood Reporter is saying Theory of Everything’s Felicity Jones (previously on the short list) has landed on top.

After a series of hush-hush readings and tests, Lucasfilm and Disney have zeroed in on Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones for the female lead in the Star Wars stand-alone film.

Jones is now in talks to star in the project, which Gareth Edwards is directing and Chris Weitz — who was just hired last week — is writing. Weitz is replacing Gary Whitta, who penned the first draft.

Actresses were meeting, reading and testing last week in Los Angeles for the role, with Tatiana Maslany and Rooney Mara among those in the mix.

Still not 100% confirmed (neither was Maslany, of course) but I can’t help but be disappointed. Jones is a wonderful actress but Maslany has serious chops which Hollywood keeps ignoring. I really hope she still takes it. If not, well…
