Cruise ship accident leaves Minnesota dad with severe spinal cord injury. Then his son’s wedding trip ends in tragedy: ‘Condolences to his family’

A tragic turn.

A tragic series of events led to the death of a Minnesota pastor following a severe accident on a cruise ship. According to Fox News, Stephen Junker, who was 58 years old, was celebrating his son’s wedding when the incident occurred. He was aboard the Sun Princess on August 16, 2026. The cruise ship was traveling off the coast of Italy at the time of the accident.

Ship personnel received an alert that a passenger required urgent medical attention. They discovered Stephen face down and unresponsive in a pool. The ship’s medical team provided immediate care to the guest. The personnel then arranged for his transfer to shore for further medical intervention. The Italian Coast Guard transported him to a hospital in Naples. He was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) upon his arrival at the facility.

Medical teams determined that Stephen had suffered a severe spinal cord injury. He also nearly drowned during the accident. He underwent emergency spinal surgery on August 17. His family noted that the procedure was successful, but the spinal injury remained severe. He was left quadriplegic and required a ventilator to breathe.

The family faced significant hurdles while managing his care in a foreign country

They worked tirelessly to arrange transportation to a hospital in the United States. They expressed gratitude for the support they received during these difficult times. The family had to navigate complex medical, logistical, and financial challenges throughout the process.

Stephen was eventually moved to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 23. This move was intended to provide him with additional medical treatment. His daughter, Elizabeth, provided an update on the family GoFundMe’s page. She announced that he succumbed to his injuries on September 4. He passed away at 6.33 p.m. while surrounded by his wife, children, parents, and friends.

Further diagnostic testing revealed that his injuries were not treatable. The family expressed appreciation for the care provided at the Mayo Clinic. They felt reassured that everything possible was done to help him. Princess Cruises confirmed the death in a statement to the press. The cruise line extended its heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

Stephen had been a pastor for over 10 years

Stephen began his professional career as a pharmacist after graduating from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He later attended the Lutheran Brethren Seminary to pursue his calling. He had served as the pastor of Chippewa Lutheran Church for nearly 10 years. The community remembered him for his faith and the impact he had on those around him.

His church shared a tribute following his death. The congregation highlighted his love for animated sermons and engaging conversations. He was known for his readiness to help anyone in need. Nathaniel Junker, Stephen’s son, sang worship songs inspired by his father during this period. The church noted that he closed his eyes to this life and opened his eyes to Jesus.

According to The Sun, Stephen’s widow, Jeanine Junker, shared her thoughts on the church Facebook page. She expressed that mourning the loss of a pastor is very difficult to understand. She said she believes that he will rise again in faith. The obituary for the pastor described his quiet and unshakable faith. He remained unafraid of what was to come even in his final moments.

His thoughts remained focused on the church and the people he loved until the end. Stephen is survived by his wife, five children, a grandchild, his parents, and a sister. He also leaves behind a host of other family members and friends. A funeral service was scheduled for 11 a.m. on September 11 at Chippewa Lutheran Church. A burial followed the service for the community to pay their final respects.

The family received many messages of support from friends and loved ones

One mourner wrote on Facebook that they hoped God would bring comfort to all who loved him. The family expressed their thanks for every prayer and kind thought. They appreciated every phone call and offer of support during the ordeal. The loss of such a dedicated individual has left a significant void in his church and family. His legacy of faith remains a central theme in the tributes shared by those who knew him.

Stephen Junker was a man who gave much to his community and left a lasting impression on many lives. The circumstances of his passing were unexpected and deeply difficult for his family to process. They have remained focused on honoring his memory and the life he led as a pastor and father.

The transition from a celebration of marriage to a time of mourning has been an immense challenge for all involved. Many people continue to share their condolences as the community reflects on his life and ministry.
