‘How selfish can you be?’: Bride’s aunt causes outrage by digging into the wedding cake before the married couple in bizarre power play

It’s a well-known wedding tradition for the bride and groom to cut the cake and take the first slice. It’s one of the most important moments in any ceremony, and on the couple’s perfect day, you’d expect it to be one of the few things that simply can’t go wrong. But sometimes it does go wrong, like a cake being smashed in a bride’s face, or in this case, some hungry family members barging in to pick at the cake before it’s been cut.

The video, which has gone viral on TikTok, shows bride Tay and her husband cutting the cake together. However, from the side, two older women are seen hovering by the table. Then one of them is seen barging into the frame and picking off a piece of the cake with her hands before putting it in her mouth. The bride gives the camera an exasperated look while the song “Stop the Wedding” by Ashe plays.

The caption also suggests that Tay was expecting something to go down at her wedding: “If you know my family, this is on brand,” she wrote. She went on to explain that it was her family (not the husband’s) and that she and her husband “were both in shock and laughing at it,” vowing not to let the stunt ruin the rest of their night.

The cake cutting is an important tradition

According to The Knot, the cutting of the cake at a wedding is a symbolic tradition that dates back all the way to the ancient Romans. Back then, the tradition was to break bread over the bride’s head, but it has evolved over the years. Regardless, it is still just as popular and meaningful today as it was back then.

The cake cutting provides the perfect opportunity for a couple photo as well as symbolizing the couple’s first joint task in marriage. However, the aunt’s interference put a dampener on the significant moment, and the disappointment is visible on Tay’s face.

The video has been viewed millions of times already, with viewers shocked over the blatant disregard for wedding tradition by the woman. Many had questions about the incident, “Why are they even up at the table[?]” one viewer asked. “Who does that[?] why do they think they could stick their nasty little fingers in the cake[?]” added another.

Others claimed that they would have had strong words with the woman for stepping on the moment and asked, “Why would you & your husband not just tell them to go away?” Tay claimed that there were 18 other people behind the camera telling both women to sit down, but they didn’t listen.
