Florida woman’s HomeGoods pillow test goes horribly wrong, mistakes an elderly woman’s head for a pillow: ‘Thankfully, I was wearing a mask’

How lost do you have to be to miss that?

Browsing the home decor aisles without a shopping list usually leads to impulse-buying a scented candle or an extra throw blanket. But for one shopper at HomeGoods, it allegedly led to the ultimate public mortification.

Florida creator Isa (@isaglopes_) took to TikTok to recount an unforgettable mishap from 2021. She detailed how she accidentally grabbed and squeezed a seated elderly woman’s head in the middle of a showroom floor. The storytime video has pulled in hundreds of thousands of views from horrified and deeply amused viewers who couldn’t fathom surviving that level of secondhand embarrassment.

The encounter reportedly left her so thoroughly convinced she had committed a crime that she avoided the retail chain entirely. She also even allegedly sent family scouts to verify whether her face was posted at the entrance.

A casual browse through the HomeGoods sofa aisle ended in a physical blunder

Isa admitted that she was browsing completely absentmindedly, wandering between displays without paying proper attention to her surroundings. Upon reaching the living room section, her eyes landed on what appeared to be an oversized, fluffy white accent pillow nestled low against a couch.

Isa assumed that it was typical decorative stock, given HomeGoods’ reputation of bizarre finds. So, she reached out to test the softness. But instead of stopping at an initial tap, she committed fully to the test with two distinct squeezes before her brain could process what her hands were touching.

“I get to the couch section, and I see those big, fluffy white pillows—the ones that like you expect to see at a HomeGoods,” Isa explained, reenacting the motion on camera. “I did one squeeze. On the second squeeze is when I processed that first squeeze, and I realized what I was grabbing was hard.”

As her fingers tightened, the supposed pillow allegedly rotated against her palm. Looking down, Isa found herself locking eyes with an elderly woman seated on the furniture, whose head she was gripping with a full handful of hair.

Isa made a hasty escape and avoided the retailer entirely

Paralyzed by sheer shock, Isa bypassed the standard social script entirely. Instead of offering an apology or blaming the lighting, she allegedly turned on her heel and sprinted toward the automatic sliding doors.

“Thankfully this was 2021, so I was still wearing a mask because of COVID,” she said. “So I bolted out of the store. I don’t say sorry, I don’t explain the situation. I was so in shock and embarrassed that I took off without saying a word. It literally looked like I had just stolen something, like I was shoplifting.”

Isa then watched the woman exit minutes later to tell her companions about the rogue “head-grabber” roaming the displays. And Isa’s paranoia lingered for weeks. “A week after it happened, I sent my mom into that HomeGoods to see if they had like wanted posters, ‘cause I was certain that they were after me for like assaulting the elderly or something, like elder abuse… Thankfully that did not happen; there were no wanted pictures of me.”

It’s true that running up to squeeze merchandise is second nature for anyone looking to refresh their living space. But if a plush white cushion that you just squeezed turns out to be an actual human being, then a self-imposed lifetime ban from the store doesn’t sound extreme. It is probably the only dignified move left on the board. Oh, and this isn’t the first time a pillow has caused problems to an unsuspecting stranger.
