California woman gets terrified by a big man rushing her with open arms at Target, then realizes it’s because of her t-shirt: ‘Never been so scared’
I’d be laughing about it for way too long.

We all throw on whatever clean clothes are within arm’s reach for a casual errand to the retail store. But graphic t-shirts carry their own unspoken social risks that we don’t realize until a stranger reacts to it. California content creator Jas (@justtheejp) also had to learn it the hard way after an unthinking wardrobe selection turned a routine Target run into a moment of pure panic.
In a candid TikTok video, Jas recounted a hilarious misunderstanding that sent her scrambling through the Target aisles. What she initially mistook for an unprovoked physical charge was actually a stranger reportedly taking the printed text on her chest entirely too literally.
Novelty slogan tops are meant to be playful. But taking them out into everyday retail environments can easily backfire, as evident by Jas’ encounter. She even admitted it in her video caption, saying, “I have never been so scared at Target.” But we’re happy that the terrifying incident ended with a laugh.
A loud greeting and outstretched arms triggered an aisle sprint
The bizarre interaction started while Jas was navigating the store with her cart, completely lost in thought. Just then, a man allegedly called out to her, shouting, “Excuse me, excuse me.” But Jas assumed it had nothing to do with her and kept walking. After all, a stranger screaming at you always rings alarm bells. But the man reportedly followed up with a louder, “Excuse me, ma’am.”
When Jas finally turned around, she allegedly saw a huge man bearing down on her with his arms spread wide. Unaware of why a massive man was rushing at her with open arms, Jas abandoned her cart and took off. “I just started jogging and I was like, ‘Oh no!’ Like jogging a little bit in the aisle. And I was so scared.” Given the rising stranger incidents near retail stores like Target, her reaction was justified.
But seeing Jas running away in panic, the man allegedly shouted, “No, your shirt! Your shirt says Free Hugs!” Hearing him shout about the text on her top, Jas finally ground to a halt as realization hit her.
The forgotten t-shirt cleared up the confusing Target encounter
Jas was apparently wearing a graphic print t-shirt that read “Free Hugs.” So, she realized that the stranger had taken her t-shirt as an offer, evidently excited to redeem it right there on the sales floor. She still had the t-shirt on while shooting the TikTok recounting the incident.
Jas explained that she had never worn the specific graphic top outside the house before. She had reportedly only thrown it on that morning to avoid waking her mother, who was taking a nap in the room where her other clothes were kept.
Having thrown on the top without a second thought, she had zero recollection of the bold slogan emblazoned across her front until the stranger tried to cash in. Laughing off the post-sprint adrenaline, Jas cautioned her audience never to sport that specific design unless they are actively prepared to be tracked down for physical contact.
The incident reminded her that loungewear belongs on the couch for a reason. If you throw on a novelty t-shirt with an open-ended social invite, don’t be surprised when eager strangers in the aisles try to take you up on the offer.
