Creating this costume was unlike any costume I’ve made before. Every year, I try to find a cosplay idea that will challenge my skills, and this one definitely fit the bill as this character has no limbs (just wires) and a forehead that it part of the “helmet.”
This was my first time working with Worbla and it was a fun and finger-burning experience. I made the majority of my templates on craft foam, then formed my body pieces (breastplate, back plate and arm pieces) with the help of a head gun. I had a friend make a duct tape body cast of me so I could make the proper measurements for the chest and back plates. I also made my first whole head cast in order to have a base for creating the helmet piece and the forehead prosthetic. I think my helmet is my greatest costuming achievement to date. I created a forehead prosthetic (to hide my eyebrows and blend my face into the helmet) out of gelatin which proved very effective visually and cost wise.
The reactions I got this costume at my local comic con were amazing and beyond what I had expected. There was one point where a con-goer thought I was a statue placed by a door at the con (because I was standing still) and then jumped in surprise when I moved! I even made an Instructables so others could learn how to make this costume if they wanted!
For me, cosplay is the most gratifying hobby one can have. Sure it’s always nice to get accolades about your costume. But what I love most about it is that it not only gives me the chance to exercise my creative skills, but it lets me be a part of a community that is so welcoming, supportive, and giving. No matter what a person cosplays as, the community embraces them as one of their own whether they like the cosplay or not. Cosplayers are some of the most genuine people out there because they don’t care how people perceive them; all they want is to showcase what they are passionate about and share it with others. I am proud to be part of the cosplay community
