Ben Wang is reportedly being eyed for Iceman, and Marvel has a rare chance to get Bobby Drake right
Marvel can finally fix what past X-Men movies got wrong about Iceman

Another original X-Man could be heading to the MCU. According to an exclusive from Deadline, ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ and ‘The Long Walk’ star Ben Wang is in talks to play Bobby Drake, aka Iceman, in the upcoming X-Men feature. As with any “in talks” report, nothing is official, and the ink isn’t dry on a contract yet.
Wang has been having a very good couple of years. Beyond the two films above, he’s next seen as District 12 tribute Wyatt Callow in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Marvel clearly liked what it saw, because he reportedly tested for the part alongside several other actors, including Gabriel LaBelle, Jackson Kelly, and Rhenzy Feliz. That’s a stacked list of young talent, which tells you how much attention this role is getting.
If the deal closes, Wang joins a cast that already includes Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, Asa Germann as Angel, and Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. Jake Schreier directs from a script by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, with Kevin Feige producing. The film is slated for May 5, 2028.
Why Bobby deserves better
Iceman is one of the original five X-Men, and he has often been treated as the team’s wisecracker and little else. Bobby has long been the youngest, goofiest member of the group, the one who cracks jokes while everyone else carries the angst. But he’s also an Omega-level mutant, with power that dwarfs what most of the movies ever let him show.
Past screen versions largely wasted that. The earlier films gave him a handful of scenes and a cool ice slide, and the character was never allowed to be much more than a supporting player. For a hero with this much potential, that’s a pretty glaring miss.
The chance to get it right
In the comics, Bobby came out as gay in 2015, and that storyline gave the character something he’d never really had: an inner life. His story is about a man who spent years avoiding who he was, hiding behind humor while carrying enormous power. That’s rich material, and a live-action version could finally tell it.
Wang’s résumé suggests he has the range. He can play warm, funny, and vulnerable, and that’s the exact mix Bobby needs. Whether Marvel chooses to engage with that history is another question, and one the studio hasn’t addressed.
For now, fans should treat this as a promising sign rather than a done deal. But if Wang does land the role, the studio has a chance to give Bobby Drake what he’s been missing for decades — the spotlight and a story worth telling.
