‘I’m Disgusted’: After His Attacks on Canada, One of Trump’s Biggest Critics Shows Solidarity With the Country in Defiance
Seems like Canada has a friend in the Governor of California.
California Governor Gavin Newsom is one of Donald Trump’s harshest critics. Since Trump’s second term as President began, Newsom has launched fresh attacks almost every week, questioning everything from his policies to his public demeanor.
Newsom’s efforts, of course, haven’t come without pushback. Trump has also occasionally slung mud at Newsom and, more recently, at his family. Still, Newsom shows no sign of backing off and, in his latest efforts, criticized Trump’s actions toward Canada.
As early as Monday, people worldwide were notified that the United States would increase tariffs on select Canadian goods, raising prices to record levels. This marked Trump’s latest attempts to contribute to a trade war between America and Canada.
“I love your country. I love the people”
In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump wrote, “On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50%.” He added, “Canada will be treated like a State no longer! On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!”
In response to Trump, many people spoke up, including Gavin Newsom, who discussed the issue on CBS News Network. Newsom told Canadian journalist Rosemary Barton how much he loves Canada, stressing that he has built good relationships with its people and the country over the years.
He said, “I had a good relationship with the last prime minister. I’ve had the pleasure of being up from my early days up in Hudson Bay and… out there with the beluga whales and great memories and some of the great cities and in Canada. So I love your country. I love the people. I love the investment…” He added, “I’m proud of the relationship we’ve had with your country, and I just want folks to know California is a stable partner.”
During the same interview, Newsom pointed out that Trump was an exception in his views against Canada, not the norm. He said Canada had more support from Americans like him in positions of power.
He added, “We do not in any way, shape or form condone the behavior of this president as it relates to how he’s treated you and… in just… condescending terms.” He continued, “I’m disgusted by it, and I just want folks up north to know that there are a lot more Americans like me than there are like Donald Trump.”
After Trump revealed his Canadian goods-and-services tariff plans, Prime Minister Mark Carney outlined his plans to counter the economic setback. In a statement, he said that Canada would “match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses and mentioned that Canada will implement measures to assist its workers and businesses, building upon almost $25 billion in support given over the last 18 months.
