A 6’2 Man Compliments a Woman Dressed in Pink Japanese Fashion. Then Her Friend Bursts Out Laughing: ‘I Accidentally Bullied a Man’
"I was not making fun of you, I was being genuine."

Wearing alternative Japanese street fashion out in public takes confidence. Most subculture enthusiasts are well-prepared for lingering stares and confused double-takes in everyday spaces. But when TikTok creator Alastor (@tealprincess) got an unexpected, genuine compliment from a stranger, her friend derailed it with ill-timed giggles. And just like that, a sweet exchange allegedly turned into an agonizing comedy of errors.
In a TikTok storytime sitting at over 8,500 views, she recounted how an innocent gesture of appreciation in the chip aisle accidentally left a well-meaning shopper feeling ridiculed. She revealed that she recently went on a casual supermarket snack run dressed in head-to-toe Lolita fashion. But she never imagined that receiving a compliment would lead to the ultimate public misunderstanding.
The alleged encounter occurred while Alastor was browsing the snack aisle at a local grocery store. She was dressed in an elaborate pink dress complete with lace frills, oversized bows, and styled blonde pigtails. Accompanied by a friend to grab chips, she noticed a tall, awkward-looking stranger approaching their direction.
A grocery store compliment in the snack aisle went sideways
Passing by the pair, the man took a moment to offer a polite remark, reportedly telling Alastor, “Your outfit’s really cute.” Alastor was touched by the compliment and warmly thanked him. She figured that the young man was being completely genuine and kind. However, before the moment could pass naturally, her friend allegedly suddenly burst into uncontrollable, full-volume laughter right behind them.
“My friend, for some unknown reason, bursts out laughing. Like, not a little laugh, like a full laugh-f–king bursts out laughing! And I’m like, ‘What are you laughing at?'” Hearing the sudden outburst, the man allegedly stopped in his tracks and turned around to clear the air.
The stranger turned back to defend his sincere compliment
Clearly embarrassed, the man defensively insisted, “I was not making fun of you, I was being genuine.” Alastor then realized that the man had assumed the laughter was aimed at his compliment. She panicked, while desperately trying to reassure him that her friend was laughing at her rather than mocking him.
“In reality, I had no clue what the f–k he’s laughing about. But I’m like, I don’t want to be that guy. Like, I don’t want to be making fun of him when he’s trying to compliment me,” Alastor explained.
After the man walked away, her friend finally revealed the absurd reason behind the outburst. Allegedly, he had only just processed the surreal juxtaposition of someone walking through a standard supermarket aisle in full Lolita attire.
Social dynamics can easily backfire when bystanders misinterpret body language or companion reactions. When a stranger steps outside their comfort zone to compliment an unconventional outfit, an unexpected laugh can instantly read as cruel mockery. Apparently, that’s what unfolded in Alastor’s story.
Reflecting on the painful misunderstanding, Alastor expressed deep guilt for making a sweet stranger feel like the punchline of an inside joke. As she expressed in her video title, she felt like she “accidentally bullied a man.”
Remember that giving someone a sincere compliment in public takes guts. So, if someone appreciates your bold fashion choice, never forget to leave them with a warm thank-you. Especially if your friend’s ill-timed laughter makes you look like an accidental villain.
