Woman Orders Coffee at Starbucks ‘Freshly Postpartum’ but Finds It Bland. When She Asks for a Remake, the Barista Says Her Taste Buds Have Changed
She just wanted her coffee and got judged instead.
Picture this: you are having a terrible day, and you know that the only thing that can make you feel a little better is a cup of coffee you order every day, and someone gets it wrong. Would you not lose your mind? I personally would, and I know many who would too, but @lexyxdguajardo (Alexis) handled the situation pretty well.
In a TikTok video, Alexis said she went to Starbucks, “freshly postpartum,” and ordered her usual, “which is a brown sugar, a milkshake, and espresso, no cinnamon, add whipped cream.” However, when she received and drank it, it apparently tasted like watered-down espresso.
Alexis said she spoke to the barista about it and was asked if she wanted to order something else, but she refused, saying this is the drink she usually orders and she wanted it remade. The barista went inside and came out with the remade drink, but Alexis said it still tasted the same.
“She definitely did not have it remade”
Alexis said she told the barista about her two-week-old daughter and how she wasn’t getting any sleep, while emphasizing the importance of having her coffee the usual way. However, the barista’s response was unexpected. The barista supposedly told Alexis that her taste buds had changed due to pregnancy.
Recounting what she said, Alexis stated, “And she literally looked at me and said, you know, sometimes people. Sometimes people’s taste buds change. Your. Your taste buds probably change, sis.” She added that the barista again offered to refund her, but she refused and eventually got the correct order.
Over a hundred people commented on Alexis’ post. Some believed the barista didn’t remake the drink the second time, others cited possible reasons why she didn’t get it right the first time. One user wrote, “She definitely did not have it remade and just handed you back the same drink.” Another user said, “But she could remake it 100 times, if she doesn’t know how to make it or the machine is broken, it’s gonna taste the same. Was it different the third time?”
A few people also spoke of experiencing something similar. One user commented, saying, “No, because you just confirmed every time I get mine wrong. I go EVERY SINGLE DAY. IT TASTES LIKE WATERED DOWN ESPRESSO WHEN IT’S WRONG!” Another user stated, “I literally just had this same thing happen to me with my drink that I get every day. When I asked if they could make it again (for the 3rd time) the barista straight up told me no…”
Can your taste buds change post pregnancy?
Yes, women may notice a difference in taste after pregnancy because hormonal changes can affect their taste buds. This is just one of many physical and psychological changes the female body undergoes following the stress of childbirth, which was popularized by the 17 diapers TikTok trend last year.
A Smart Cells article highlights some of the other changes a woman might experience postpartum, including physical soreness in the perineal area (in case of natural birth) and around the site of operation (in case of C-section). Women might also experience emotional changes (postpartum anxiety and depression), changes in how they smell (they may emit a strong body odor), changes in hair (hair fall, change in texture), and postpartum night sweats, in addition to other symptoms.
If Alexis was experiencing any of these symptoms because she was recently postpartum, her reaction to the diluted drink makes sense. At least she didn’t react like the Male Karen, who tried to scam a barista and threw a tantrum when refused.
