Teacher Spent Own Money to Decorate Classroom, Only to Find Everything Infested With Mold: ‘This is the Reason Nobody Gets Into Education’

A content creator on TikTok took to the platform to share one of the challenges that come with being an educator—a ruined classroom. The original video was purportedly shared by @alyssamia11, whose account and video had been taken down. But X account @cecegkh re-uploaded the footage and subsequently garnered over 1.6 million views.
The X user claimed that the teacher had returned from summer break to set up the classroom, only for the teacher to find her classroom covered with mold. “Happy day one of classroom set-up. Except my entire room is covered with mold and everything is ruined,” the teacher said in the video.
The teacher panned the camera to the various items allegedly found in her classroom that were covered in mold—chairs, desks, posters, an ottoman, picture frames, cabinets, books, and even the walls. The teacher claimed that she took great care to make sure her classroom stayed clean and neat all year.

The teacher alleges that incidents like these are the “reason that nobody gets into education.” The disappointment is understandable, as inhaling or consuming mold could also lead to sickness that teachers avoid for their students. “We’re the ones that have to fund our classrooms in the first place,” she said.
The teacher also claimed that the classroom became a breeding ground for mold due to the air conditioning being turned off all summer. “But since there was no A/C all summer, everything that I poured my money into is ruined,” she said. “I love my job with my whole heart, but we do not get paid enough for this.”
The teacher called the situation “ridiculous” as she allegedly maintained the room, only for her to see it destroyed by mold. With teaching wages stagnating amid rising costs, the educator shared that she would share in her wishlist items that the classroom needed if anyone wished to help.
Cecegkh alleges that the teacher got axed from her job after the video was circulated and gained traction. “This is horrible and the teacher should not have to pay for this by losing her job and allowing everyone to know what is going on,” one commenter said. “Hopefully she gets a good lawyer and sues them for wrongful termination.” However, the original creator of the video had not released an update, and the identity of the school remains unknown.
