The actor is best known for his role as the no-nonsense, tough as nails former US Army Major turned all-round action hero in the Prime series Reacher. In real life he’s an avid outdoorsman who knows his way around the wilderness, and he’s set to explore that side of his life in a new Netflix reality television series that will take a group of celebrities into the wild and see how they manage survive.

The streaming service revealed the show was in the works, but not much else. All that we know so far is that Ritchson will be taking charge of a group of “influencers and headline-makers,” who will have to “rely on their instincts, determination, and each other to outlast the competition and discover who they are without fame and followers.”

Locations, the cast, and even the project’s name remain under wraps, and it is also yet to be determined if Ritchson will simply be a host, or try to live up to his survival credentials and actually lead the team of famous people to safety. The actor’s public and frank discussion of mental health means he’s also well placed to navigate the psychological and emotional aspects of an experience like this for contestants, which can be as daunting as it is rewarding.

Ritchson will be glad to be back in the news for more traditional reasons after an altercation between himself and a neighbor went viral earlier in the year. Although the vast majority of those who know the context of the incident find themselves on the side of the War Machine actor, it’s still not ideal for a man who, despite his large frame and the roles he takes, appears to be quite a thoughtful and gentle person (unless you get in the way of his motorbike, of course).
