Woman receives a surprise proposal. Then one detail about the diamond ring completely distracts her: ‘I didn’t know it was gonna be’
Proposal videos usually leave viewers talking about the question, the answer, and the celebration that follows. Sometimes, however, it is a single comment made afterward that completely reshapes the conversation.
That is exactly what happened after TikTok creator @rochelleevelyn14 shared a proposal video that quickly gained attention online. Instead of celebrating the engagement alone, viewers became divided over whether her reaction after seeing the ring was simply honest or came across as ungrateful.
The discussion has since moved beyond the proposal itself. It has raised questions about whether engagement rings should always be a surprise, or whether couples should have more say in choosing something they may wear for the rest of their lives.
The moment took an unexpected turn
TikTok creator Rochelle (@rochelleevelyn14) shared a video showing her fiancé proposing during a scenic outdoor overlook. After he asks, “Will you marry me?” she says yes and becomes emotional as the couple celebrates together.
After the proposal, she looks closely at the engagement ring and says, “It’s so blue. I didn’t know it was gonna be blue.” She then asks him, “Do you like it?” He responds, and the couple continues talking before the clip ends with her fiancé saying, “I didn’t think we’d get an audience.”
The brief exchange quickly became the part of the video that attracted the most attention, helping the clip surpass 13.8 million views on TikTok. While many viewers believed she was simply surprised by the appearance of the stone, others argued the remark overshadowed an otherwise emotional proposal.
Some criticized her reaction, with one writing, “‘You like it?’ Haha. She hates it.” Another commented, “Hope his next proposal gets a better reaction.”
Others defended the creator, arguing that someone who plans to wear an engagement ring every day should be allowed to have preferences. “Let’s normalise asking your girlfriend the type of engagement rings she likes,” one viewer wrote. Another added, “Guys she has to wear that for the rest of her life…. It’s perfectly okay to want to wear a ring that you LOVE.”
The conversation is similar to other viral proposal moments, including a Chicago woman who challenged traditional expectations by proposing to her boyfriend and another woman who faced backlash after saying no to a Walmart engagement ring.
As criticism grew, the creator addressed the reaction in both the video’s caption and a follow-up TikTok. “I’m truly sorry that the statement “it’s so blue, I didn’t know it would be so blue” said 4 minutes after I said yes and finished crying and telling my fiancé how happy I am equals that I am ungrateful and is making people SOOOO mad,” she wrote. She added that the ring was “so pretty” but admitted, “tbh not for me.”
In her update, the creator said the viral clip showed only a small part of the original six-minute video. She explained that she and her fiancé had discussed engagement for months, looked at rings together, and that she chose the setting while he upgraded the diamond.
She said neither of them realized the upgraded diamond would appear as blue as it did. The online listing referenced a “Fancy Blue” diamond, but both believed the darker appearance shown on the website was caused by lighting or reflections in the product preview.
The creator said her fiancé was also surprised by the ring and found the situation funny. She added that they approved a replacement diamond and that she is currently wearing a temporary ring while waiting for it to arrive.
The creator says the viral clip has been taken out of context. She maintains it was meant to capture a funny surprise, not disappointment with either the proposal or her fiancé.
