Chili’s Customer From Vermont Gets the Triple Dipper. Then She Realizes Something Is Seriously Missing: ‘I Don’t Appreciate’

Back to basics.

Chili’s just found itself in the middle of a mozzarella meltdown, and it’s all thanks to one viral TikTok video. Creator Vickie (@vickiej_) posted a clip in early June 2026 showing her family’s Triple Dipper platter, zooming in on the fried mozzarella sticks. Instead of the three or four pieces she swore she used to get, there were only two. “Chili’s, I don’t appreciate that,” she said, panning to her son. “We don’t appreciate that.” The video racked up over 1.3 million views.

The Triple Dipper is one of Chili’s most popular appetizers, letting you pick three items from a lineup of six options, including fried mozzarella, boneless wings, and crispy chicken crispers. “Since when did the Triple Dipper start coming with two mozzarella sticks?” Vickie asked in the video. “It used to come with at least three or four, I know for a fact.”

The comments section exploded with opinions. Some users backed her up, arguing that if prices keep climbing, portions should too. “If I’m paying $23 for a damn Triple Dipper, I better have my three,” one person wrote. Another put it bluntly: “It doesn’t matter if two is enough if you’re paying the same price and getting less.”

But Chili’s wasn’t having it

The chain’s official TikTok account chimed in with: “It’s always been two,” followed by a couple of heart emojis. That shut down the debate for most viewers, though a few still accused the company of “gaslighting.” Others pointed out that the Triple Dipper is already a calorie bomb, with some combinations clocking in at 3,000 calories. “I promise you have enough food,” one user wrote. Another said, “Mind it’s a TRIPLE dipper. It needs triple everything.”

So, what’s the truth? Official images and videos of the Triple Dipper consistently show two fried mozzarella pieces, not three or four. The menu doesn’t explicitly state how many pieces you get, but the visual evidence is pretty clear. That said, there are three types of fried mozzarella to choose from: Original Plain, Nashville Hot, and Honey Chipotle.

It’s possible Vickie was mixing up the portion sizes with another appetizer, like the chicken tenders, which do come in larger quantities. Either way, her video tapped into a bigger frustration – shrinkflation, or the sneaky practice of giving customers less for the same price.

Chili’s has actually been leaning into the opposite strategy. The chain has positioned itself as a champion of generous portions, even taking jabs at fast-food rivals for shrinking their servings. CEO Kevin Hochman, who’s been leading the company’s turnaround since 2022, has made it a mission to keep portions big and prices low. “We see that on social media where consumers complain about how small portions have gotten,” he told CNN in early June. “Size matters to Chili’s.”

Hochman’s approach seems to be working

Chili’s has reported 20 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth, with traffic up double digits. The chain is now the second-largest casual-dining brand by revenue in the U.S., thanks in part to its focus on value.

One of its most successful promotions is the “3 for Me” meal deal, which includes an appetizer, entree, and drink starting at $10.99. The Triple Dipper itself has gone viral on TikTok multiple times, thanks to those satisfying cheese pulls and the ability to customize your combo. But Hochman isn’t just resting on the menu’s success. He’s also giving the restaurants a nostalgic makeover, bringing back the red-leather booths and colorful tile tables that defined Chili’s in the 1990s.

The chain is remodeling about 10% of its 1,200 U.S. locations each year, starting with four test sites in Dallas, where Chili’s was founded in 1975. “Our objective is we want to make Chili’s more Chili’s,” Hochman said. The redesign includes Southwestern tile on the exterior, a “Welcome to Chili’s” sign drawn by the same chalk artist who decorated the original location, and even a nod to the chain’s first menu from 1975.

Hochman believes the updates will drive word-of-mouth buzz and attract new customers. “When you can do the fundamentals really well, that can become your competitive edge,” he said. Those fundamentals include good food, quality service, and low prices – something Chili’s has been doubling down on as fast-food chains raise their prices.

Hochman, who previously worked at KFC, has even taken shots at McDonald’s by introducing dupes of its most famous burgers, like the Big Smasher (a Big Mac clone) and the QP (a Quarter Pounder knockoff). Both have been huge hits, helping drive nearly 50% revenue growth since 2022.

Chili’s is still affected by economic pressures

Consumer confidence is at record lows, and many people are cutting back on discretionary spending. But Hochman isn’t worried. “If consumers are going to pull back their trips to restaurants, are they going to choose the ones that maybe they had an OK experience last night, or are they going to choose the one that they know they’re going to have a great experience?” he asked. “We’re going to win in that environment.”

While Vickie’s video might have been a case of the Mandela Effect – where people misremember details – it struck a nerve. Customers are hyper-aware of portion sizes and prices these days, and even a small change can feel like a betrayal.

Chili’s has made it clear that two fried mozzarella pieces have always been the standard, but that doesn’t mean everyone’s happy about it. Some commenters still think the Triple Dipper should live up to its name, with triple the mozzarella, triple the wings, or triple the crispers.
