Gavin Newsom’s office slams Trump’s ‘sick and disgusting’ cash grab, and the backlash has left everyone stunned
What is a 'National Security Briefing Member'?

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office has outright slammed President Donald Trump, accusing him of fundraising directly from the deaths of soldiers. They’re calling it “sick and disgusting,” and it has raised many eyebrows.
According to Newsweek, the whole situation came to light when S.V. Dáte, a senior White House correspondent, shared a post on X. It included a screenshot of an email sent out to the president’s supporters. This email was offering something called a “National Security Briefing Member” status. The kicker? The email featured an image of Trump at his recent visit to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware where he was honoring troops killed in the ongoing war on Iran.
The remains of these service members had just arrived back in the US during a solemn ceremony attended by Trump and First Lady Melania. It was a really sensitive moment. The US-Israel war on Iran has already caused civilian and American military casualties, and it’s also driven up oil prices and heightened tensions across Arab nations.
People are not happy with Trump promoting his ‘merch’ at solemn events
This isn’t the first time Trump’s appearance at the Dover ceremony has drawn criticism. He was widely talked about for wearing a white baseball cap with ‘USA’ spelled out in gold lettering, a hat from his own branded merchandise line. People were already upset about that, and then he was seen wearing the same hat while golfing just days after the ceremony.
Dáte’s post on X was pretty direct about it, saying, “Trump is now offering ‘national security briefings’ to his millions of small dollar donors. Using a photo from his recent excursion to Dover, where he honored troops killed in his Iran war by wearing his white campaign baseball cap.” The screenshot of the email clearly shows the president’s image from the Dover visit right at the top, encouraging “supporters” to claim their spot.
Newsom’s press office didn’t hold back, sharing Dáte’s post and adding their own strong words on X. They wrote, “Donald Trump is fundraising off of dead soldiers. He is a deeply SICK and DISGUSTING MAN!” It’s a pretty strong condemnation, and it really highlights the outrage surrounding this move.
While the exact intention behind the email and Trump’s personal involvement aren’t completely clear, the move has definitely sparked widespread criticism online. Social media users have been expressing their shock and discontent.
One user, @nativelah, posted, “Trump missed his calling—as an undertaker. Thrives on death and killing.” Another, @Nele_Coprywriter, simply said, “as a copywriter, I can only shake my head.” And @mountainviews summed it up by saying, “With Donald Trump he can always find a way to go lower. Making campaign money from the deaths of our soldiers—that is low.”
