‘The most successful con artist’: In a twist, Donald Trump says his Iran war isn’t about Iran

It has been nearly two weeks since the United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran. The same has caused severe devastation, resulting in the deaths of many, including members of the Iranian regime, such as its supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. Not only have people been affected, but the US and Israel have also targeted key locations in Iran, causing infrastructural damage that has negatively impacted both the residents of the country and other nations with trade relations. For instance, Iran’s oil refineries and fuel storage facilities are being targeted by Israel, prompting Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital trade route for global oil shipments.

As fears of rising oil prices spread worldwide, Donald Trump has made it clear that he has no intention of ending his campaign against Iran until he achieves specific goals. While his expectations for this operation weren’t very clear the last time he spoke about it, they became clearer in his recent press conference. In short, based on what he said recently, it appears he wants to gain some form of control over Iran, likely its resources, especially oil. However, of course, he didn’t say mention it explicitly.

Trump reveals plans for “building” Iran

During the US’s war with Iran, Donald Trump and other members of his cabinet have been saying conflicting things about the developments, which have left people confused. Therefore, during Trump’s press conference on March 9, 2026, a reporter attempted to clarify one such contradiction made by Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. She asked Trump to confirm whether it was true that the war in Iran was “complete,” as he said, or if it was in the early stages, as Hegseth claimed.

In response, Trump said, “Well, I think you could say both, the beginning. It’s the beginning of building a new country, but they certainly…they have no navy. They have no air force. They have no anti-aircraft equipment. It’s all been blown up. They have no radar. They have no telecommunications, and they have no leadership. It’s all gone. So you know, you could look at that statement. We could… we could call it a tremendous success. Right now, as we leave here, I could call it, or we could go further, and we’re going to go further. But the big risk on that war has been over for three days.”

Trump deflects question about increasing oil prices amidst the Iran war

Since Israel is attacking Iran’s oil reserves, oil prices are rising, and with the closing of the Strait of Hormuz, they are likely to increase further in the coming weeks. However, billionaire Donald Trump does not seem too worried about this. When asked about his promise to waive certain additional oil sanctions amid tensions with Iran, Trump had little concrete to say. He briefly mentioned that he expected oil prices to rise, but at a lower rate than anticipated. He then quickly shifted to brag about the US military’s success in Iran.

Regarding the latter, Trump said, “This was a military success, the likes of which people haven’t seen. We have the best military. We have the best equipment. We have, I believe, the best generals. We have the best. And this went very quickly. Uh, we talked about that with President Putin. He was very impressed with what he saw because nobody’s ever seen anything quite like it.”
