Everyone Loves the Sopranos. But Who Would Tony and His Friends Vote For?

The cast of 'The Sopranos'

Nearly two decades on from its iconic final episode (or infuriating, depending on who you ask), The Sopranos retains a special place in the pop culture ecosystem.

The HBO series was groundbreaking in a number of ways, and though the wider themes of the show touched on everything from class politics to whitewashing America’s history, the characters themselves were the real heart of what made it so great, and so compelling. These complex creations were full of multitudes, and so it tracks that there’d be some debate about their feelings on important topics. Like, for example, politics.

Show creator David Chase told The New York Times in 2019 that the show’s driving force Tony Soprano would have not been too enthused by the current president, and would have likely thought “Trump was a penny-ante, in terms of his lying and presentation.”

However, Chris Moltisanti actor Michael Imperioli disagrees. And, quite frankly, looking at Trump supporting trends in New Jersey and among Italian Americans, we think he’s on to something.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Imperioli touched upon this topic with deftness, stating:

“I think that would be one of the big themes if it was made today: the current climate in the US and what they’re doing to immigrants. The fact is that these characters are all immigrants, but I think a lot of them would probably be Trump supporters, oddly enough. So how do they reconcile those things? When Italians came over – and people forget this, or they don’t want to see it – a lot of them were undocumented.”

The fact is, Tony and his gang were as brutish as they were compelling, and as money and power-hungry as even the most corrupt politician. If there’s any group of people who would chime with Trump’s “Trump-first” policy, it’s a group of mobsters who are used to running a protection racket.
