Earlier this year, I watched the first episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman on Netflix, “It’s a Whole New Ball Game Now”. As I watched Barack Obama talk about emotionally dropping Malia off at college, John Lewis, the state of news in the United States, I had the same reaction as most people: I miss him so much. Every time Letterman jokingly referred to him as “Mr. President” I cry-laughed.
Seeing Obama was a start reminder of exactly how much the standard has lowered, and a comforting reminder of no, you’re not hallucinating. Yes, other people are seeing this and other people know that it’s absurd and wrong. It was also a reminder that although the Trump administration is doing everything in its power to undo all of Obama’s work, he didn’t disappear. He’s still here, and he still cares.
It’s exciting, then, to hear that he could be working with Netflix in the near future for more important content.
The New York Times reported last night that Obama is currently in “advanced negotiations” with Netflix to produce “a series of high-profile shows.” While there are no exact details so far, they report that the former President will “highlight inspiration stories” rather than responding directly to Donald Trump—ideas mentioned include moderated discussions about different political issues, and Michelle and Barack Obama lending their endorsement and voice to Netflix projects.
Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to the former president, said, “President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire…Throughout their lives, they have lifted up stories of people whose efforts to make a difference are quietly changing the world for the better. As they consider their future personal plans, they continue to explore new ways to help others tell and share their stories.”
