Man Splurges On Goyard Bag From The RealReal. Then Someone Approaches Him And Reveals Something Shocking About His Luxury Bag: ‘I’ve Been Suckered In’

The world of luxury fashion houses is available only to a small group of people. Within it, value and price are different than what most of us experience while shopping.
For example, a luxury brand can stitch its logo on a simple cotton shirt, and instead of paying $25 for it, you could be paying $250.
That concept recently dawned on content creator Payton Hueler (@paytonhueler) after someone confronted him about his Goyard bag. He decided to share the moment on TikTok, getting over 381,100 views.
What Did He Realize About Luxury Fashion?
“Luxury bags are a joke and I’ll prove it to you,” Hueler says at the start of the video.
He first shows a crossbody bag he says he wears all the time.
“I love this bag,” he says. “It is truly my, like, going-out bag that I grab when I need to just go and don’t need to think about anything.”
Then he shows what he describes as his travel suitcase.
“It was originally, I think, 8,800 dollars,” he says. “I bought it for not that much used from The RealReal.”
Hueler says he loves the bag and does not regret buying it used.
“I splurged,” he says. “I worked really hard this winter, OK? And I grinded my f—ing a– off and I bought this suitcase.”
He also says he owns a rare Burberry bag.
“I also have a 1 of 7 Burberry bag that Nicki Minaj is one of the other six people other than me to own one,” he says.
He says someone made him question all of it.
“Someone tonight came up to me and they were like, ‘Oh, is that DHL?’” he says.
Hueler says he corrected them, pointing out that DHL is a shipping company. Then the person tried again. They were probably trying to refer to the popular dupe website, DH Gate.
“They go, ‘Well, sorry, Alibaba,’” he says. “And I said, ‘No, it’s Goyard.’”
According to Hueler, the person knew what the brand was supposed to be. They just seemed to think the bag looked like a cheaper version.
Then he said something that really bothered him.
“He looks at me with a straight face and goes, ‘Well, I bought the same thing in blue for $93,’” Hueler says.
That number sent him into a spiral.
“$93?” he says. “You can’t leave your house for $93. You should just pi– $93 away every single time you walk out of your front door in this economy.”
The person told him the $93 version looked exactly the same.
“I’ve been suckered in,” Hueler says. “I fear I am the target market.”
He started questioning every bag he owns.
“Why have I spent small fortunes on these bags?” he asks. “The one of seven Burberry. Are you kidding me? I spent a fortune.”
He says a luxury bag is only an “investment piece” if someone is actually willing to buy it.
“Do I just start going to Alibaba at this point for anything?” he asks.
Hueler says he owns Hermès bags, Louis Vuitton bags, Goyard bags, Burberry bags, and some Coach bags.
“No shade to Coach,” he clarifies. “Coach is an iconic brand.”
However, he says the $93 comment made him look at his own collection differently.
“I have spent a fortune on bags that are brands that apparently you can get for $93,” he says.
By the end of the video, he is fully over it.
“Luxury bags are a joke,” he says. “None of these are investment pieces.”
Are Designer Goods Worth It?
That completely depends on the consumer and the brand.
While there are high-quality pieces made by major fashion houses, a significant fraction of the price often comes down to branding. Much of luxury is the exclusivity, status, scarcity, and the feeling that you are buying something most people cannot access.
There have also been investigations into how much some luxury products cost to produce compared to what they sell for.
Reuters reported that a Milan investigation found a small manufacturer could charge Dior as little as €53 to make a handbag that Dior then sold in shops for €2,600. Reuters also reported that Armani bags were sold by subcontractors for €93, resold to Armani for €250, and then sold in stores for about €1,800.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that when it comes to Goyard, the company says its trunk luggage is handcrafted in the south of France by dedicated artisans. Goyard also says each trunk requires several weeks of work.
Commenters Don’t Think It’s Worth It
In the comments, several viewers said they would not spend that kind of money on Goyard.
“Goyard is one of the cheapest looking luxury brands,” one commenter wrote. “Why would you spend thousands for that ugly pattern. If you’re gonna splurge at least buy quality.”
Another viewer joked that the cheaper version might not be that far off.
“The real ones probably cost 93 dollars to make lol,” they wrote.
Not everyone agreed, though.
“I disagree those fake bags are made so bad and eventually fall apart,” one commenter wrote.
