Elizabeth Banks Throws Her Hat in the Ring to Direct an Upcoming Star Wars Movie

The Force Aca-awakens.

Last week Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy told Fortune that she has “no doubt” a woman will eventually direct a Star Wars film, and since then, fans have wasted no time nominating some ladies that they’d like to see in the director’s chair.

After a Twitter user suggested that Pitch Perfect 2 and Pitch Perfect 3 director Elizabeth Banks would be a good fit for the role, Banks herself voiced interest in the job:

Although I wasn’t a huge fan of Pitch Perfect 2, it would be interesting to see Banks’ take on a sci-fi franchise like Star Wars. I’d be more hype to see Ava DuVernay or Lexi Alexander filling the role, but I’d honestly be excited for any female director to join the franchise, if only because that might be another tangible sign of the series’ shift in priorities and representation.

It would also be exciting to see a lesser-known female director like A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night‘s Ana Lily Amirpour take the helm. Considering how quickly men like Colin Trevorrow or Rian Johnson can rise from small indie films to big-budget action movies, that doesn’t seem like such a stretch.
