Diversity Another Day: Pierce Brosnan Says Gay James Bond Won’t Happen in Producer’s Lifetime

Today in “womp, womp,” in an interview with Details about his upcoming white-person-in-a-foreign-land movie No Escape, Pierce Brosnan dropped some unfortunate truths about the Bond team’s fear of diversity.

When asked if he could see the series ever depicting a gay 007, Brosnan answered “Sure. Why not?” but added, “Actually, I don’t know how it would work. I don’t think [Bond producer] Barbara [Broccoli] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing.”

The actor went on to say, “Let’s start with a great black actor being James Bond. Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet.”

It’s awesome to hear that Brosnan thinks a black actor could take on the Bond mantle in the near-ish future, but disheartening that more LGBTQ+ representation is out of the question (probably since a gay Bond would put a cap on the number of nubile, raring-to-go “Bond girls” the series could plausibly depict).

Bah, humbug.
