Tilda Swinton Confirms She’s Doctor Strange‘s Ancient One! This Is Not a Drill!

Tilda Swinton in the MCU!

It turns out those rumors were true, folks! Tilda Swinton is excited to play The Ancient One in Marvel’s Doctor Strange!

“Really, really, really excited,” as a matter of fact, as she told ScreenCrush. She told them the deal is done for her to appear in the movie as Doctor Strange’s “sorcerer supreme” mentor, and went on to explain what has her so jazzed about the project (for us, it’s that TILDA SWINTON IS IN IT, so she probably has other reasons):

Well, there’s no particular interest in getting into something bigger, or even smaller, I just really liked the premise of this and the idea of playing this character. I’m a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting. I’m really interested as both an actor and a fan to see what’s done in this particular world. It’s all about creativity. It’s not about everything exploding at the end. It’s about something very different. The idea of playing The Ancient One is really just too tickling. I can’t say no to that!

Of course, it’s great that Marvel had no problem swapping a character who was a man in the comic books for Swinton, though they’re also changing the character from Tibetan to white in the process, so your mileage may vary. Although, we already knew they were planning on getting away from Doctor Strange’s Tibetan origins, and I’m kind of OK with not placing mysticism on a foreign culture—something about that rubs me the wrong way to begin with.

Anyway, we’re pretty pumped to see Swinton join the MCU, and so is she. She also mentioned that she’s not afraid of long contracts and sequels and doesn’t expect her enthusiasm to wane, so hopefully we can get ready for a whole lot more Swinton in our Marvel movies.
