‘Obvious Excuse’: Pete Hegseth Refuses Accountability Over Iran and Blames Biden, but Senator Reed Immediately Clocks Him

On July 21, 2026, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and General Dan Caine testified before Congress after Donald Trump and his administration asked for an additional $67 billion to fund the United States’ ongoing war with Iran.
For approximately 3 hours, Hegseth and Caine were grilled by some members of Congress over their request, and videos of the same have made their way to social media. Among all the clips circulating online, one has gained significant momentum on X (formerly Twitter) and shows Hegseth refusing to take accountability for his and his department’s actions while attacking Iran. Instead, he is deflecting and shifting blame to the Biden administration, accusing them of mismanagement when they were in control of the government.
Pete Hegseth drags Joe Biden over discussions concerning Iran
During the July 21, 2026, Congressional testimony, Pete Hegseth was questioned about various issues concerning the US’s war efforts in Iran. At one point, Senator Jack Reed asked Hegseth if he was aware beforehand that if the US attacked Iran, they could retaliate by closing the Strait of Hormuz, to which he responded in the affirmative. Senator Reed then questioned him about his answer, noting that since Hegseth already had that information and saw that sinking Iranian ships did not lead Iran to open the Strait… however, before he could finish his sentence, Hegseth cut Senator Reed off.
Talking of Pete Hegseth, an Arizona Senator wants him impeached and has taken the necessary steps to achieve it.
Hegseth, after disrupting Senator Reed, claimed that US boats under the Biden administration had surrendered to Iranian ships, sharply contrasting that with the actions of the Trump administration. As Hegseth continued, Senator Reed was the one to interrupt him this time, urging him to answer the question he was asked and not to go off on tangents. Senator Reed said, “We’re talking about the war you started. Not a situation in which oil was flowing freely, there was no conflict, we weren’t losing personnel. So your fallback to the Biden administration is just a very, very obvious excuse for what I think is… gross negligence.”
Senator Jack Reed accuses Pete Hegseth of not giving Trump the full picture about Iran
After Senator Jack Reed learned from Pete Hegseth that his department had considered closing the Strait of Hormuz as one of Iran’s possible retaliatory actions against them following a US attack, Reed accused him of not providing the appropriate information about this to Donald Trump, the President of the United States.
Senator Reed also accused Hegseth of not revealing the potential repercussions that closing the Strait of Hormuz could have on the American people, including a surge in oil prices and Iran still having the capability to attack America and Americans. To illustrate the latter, Senator Reed mentioned that Iran killed some American servicemen “last weekend.
