At the Visual Effects Society Awards, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams had predictably few things to say about the upcoming movie, but he did have some interesting hints to drop about the look and feel of the movie. And, of course, he had to address that lightsaber.
If you’re at work or in a library or somewhere where watching video isn’t appropriate, Abrams told Collider that fans have sent him more detailed breakdowns of the cross guard lightsaber than even the Internet has seen both defending it and attacking it, but those same discussions already happened among the production team. He said of the design process,
“It was a number of conversations. It was a sketch that became a whole thing and, you know, this was not done without a lot of conversation and it’s fun to see people have the conversation that we had, but in reverse.”
He also mentioned that there was a sequence in the movie that was shot in IMAX and gave another confirmation that we can expect a more traditional Star Wars feel to the effects than all the CGI of the prequel trilogy, saying,
“I feel like the beauty of this age of filmmaking is that there are more tools at your disposal, but it doesn’t mean that any of these new tools are automatically the right tools. And there are a lot of situations where we went very much old school and in fact used CG more to remove things than to add things.”
