Dean Israelite and Arash Amel in Talks to Direct, Write WarGames Reboot, Which Is Still Happening

Shall we play a game? (Please, let's not.)

The last we heard of the WarGames reboot, it was most certainly a thing that was happening, because the `80s are like a magical fountain where all movie ideas flow from. That was back in 2011, though, and we haven’t heard much about it since—that is, until today, when we’ve learned it is still a thing that’s going to happen, but now it almost has a director and writer.

The MGM remake of the 1983 Matthew Broderick/Ally Sheedy movie about young hackers who almost start World War III by wandering into a Defense Department computer is in talks with Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) to direct and Arash Amel (Grace of MonacoI Am Legend 2) to write the script. Originally, word was that Seth Gordon (Four Christmases, Horrible Bosses), who has since moved on to the Uncharted movie, would be directing, so it’s hard to tell if this change came due to production delays and scheduling, or if Gordon decided to steer clear of the project.

According to Deadline, the talks are still early, so it’s going to be some time before the movie actually hits theaters. Presumably, they’ll use that time to figure out how to make a movie about hacking that doesn’t seem completely technologically illiterate to today’s tech-savvy audience. Maybe Hollywood can use this experience when they start remaking `90s movies, though, and we can have an actual good version of Hackers.

Or just cast Fisher Stevens as the bad guy in WarGames and give us both at once. I’d accept that.
