Wii U Hits Japan on December 8th With a Hefty Price

The announcement of a release date and price for Nintendo‘s newest console, the Wii U, has come and gone. At least, for the Japanese. Rabid fans will be able to get their hands on the device starting December 8th for a grand total of ¥26,250, which is about $337. To be fair, regular fans will also be able to purchase a Wii U at the same time, but they might be a bit more hesitant given that it costs more than the regular PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

That’s not even taking into account the premium option that will also be available. For ¥31,500 ($405), folks can grab themselves a black console with 32GB of flash memory, an HDMI cable, two power adapters, and the much-lauded GamePad. By contrast, the basic bundle includes a white console, 8GB of flash memory, and said GamePad. The experience is the same, of course, and the only major difference happens to be the amount of flash memory — unless you classify the color of the console as a deal breaker, which, frankly, it just might be.

The North American and European versions of the Wii U should have their release dates and price points announced later today, but don’t expect too much to change. So far, it looks like that rumor that the Wii U would not sell for less than $300 will pan out. All that remains is for Nintendo to completely confirm our suspicions.
