85-Year-Old Oregon Man Takes Down a Knife-Wielding Kidnapper With His Bare Hands, but the Attacker’s Past Is Far Darker

Good Samaritan to the rescue.

An 85-year-old Oregon man is being hailed as a hero after he took down a knife-wielding kidnapper with his bare hands, stopping what could have been a far more tragic outcome. The suspect, Matthew Hokulii Aranda, now faces a slew of serious charges after allegedly posing as a utility worker to ambush a 25-year-old woman in a rural Medford mobile home park. But the details of his past make this case even more disturbing.

According to PEOPLE, on May 8, Aranda allegedly waited for hours near the victim’s workplace, a mobile home park on South Stage Road in Medford. When the woman stepped outside, he reportedly used a taser to incapacitate her and began physically attacking her. That’s when the 85-year-old man nearby heard her screams and stepped in.

The elderly resident confronted Aranda, giving the victim just enough time to escape to her car. But Aranda wasn’t done. He allegedly tased the 85-year-old before chasing the woman with a large hunting knife. In a desperate move, he jumped onto the hood of her car as she drove away, only to fall off and injure himself. Deputies later found him hiding in a bush, where he was arrested without further incident.

The kidnapper is on a no-bail hold but remains in a local hospital for treatment

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) shared Aranda’s arrest video on social media, showing the moment officers pulled him from the bushes. In the footage, a K-9 officer can be heard ordering Aranda to show his hands, while Aranda screams that his leg is broken. Deputies confirmed his injury before taking him into custody. He’s now being held in Jackson County Jail on a no-bail hold but remains in a local hospital for treatment.

Aranda’s charges are extensive. A Jackson County Grand Jury indicted him on May 14 with 10 counts, including two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of first-degree attempted kidnapping, second-degree attempted kidnapping, two counts of stalking, unlawful use of a global positioning system device, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing. The JCSO described him as a “transient” in the area, and the case is still under active investigation.

What makes this story even more alarming is the accused’s criminal history

He’s a registered sex offender with a conviction from 2016, when he was found guilty of delivering a controlled substance to a minor, using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, and stalking. At the time, he was 32 years old and had an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old girl. He served just over six years in prison for those crimes.

Court records show that additional charges, including first-degree rape, were originally filed but later dropped as part of a plea deal. The rape charges alleged that Aranda had intercourse with someone under 18 who was unable to consent “by reason of physical helplessness.” Ashland police at the time suggested they believed there may have been more victims, according to The Rogue Valley Times.

The attempted kidnapping on May 8 may not have been Aranda’s first run-in with the law, but it’s by far the most violent. Before 2016, his record only included traffic infractions in Lane and Douglas counties. This time, though, the stakes were much higher.

The 85-year-old man who intervened likely saved the victim’s life, and his quick thinking is being celebrated across the community. The JCSO credited multiple agencies for their assistance in the arrest, including Oregon State Police, Medford Police Department, and Jacksonville Police Department.

The detailed planning and execution of the attempted crime paint a chilling picture

Posing as a utility worker gave Aranda a plausible reason to be lurking around the mobile home park, and his patience – waiting for hours – shows just how calculated and premeditated the attack was. The fact that he had a taser and a hunting knife on him suggests he came prepared for a violent confrontation. The victim’s escape was nothing short of miraculous, and the 85-year-old’s bravery in stepping in is the kind of real-life heroism not seen every day.

The case is still unfolding, and investigators are likely digging into whether Aranda has any other victims or connections to similar crimes. His history as a sex offender and his recent violent behavior paint a troubling picture. It’s hard not to wonder how he slipped through the cracks. For now, though, the focus is on justice for the victim and gratitude for the elderly man who stopped a nightmare from becoming something far worse.

This story is a stark reminder that danger can come from unexpected places, and sometimes, the people who step up to stop it are the ones you’d least expect. The 85-year-old’s actions weren’t just brave; they were life-saving. The community is lucky to have him, and the victim is lucky to be alive.
