A routine sewer renovation in Belgium just turned into a treasure hunt. Construction workers in Dendermonde, a city about 18 miles north of Brussels, stumbled upon a staggering haul of gold bars and coins worth an estimated $10 million while digging to upgrade the local sewer system. The discovery left the crew in disbelief, the police scrambling to secure the find, and the entire town buzzing with speculation about where the gold came from, and who it belongs to.
According to PEOPLE, the first clue that something was off came when 18-year-old worker Kobe spotted what he thought were ordinary €1 coins scattered in the dirt. It wasn’t until he picked one up and realized it was far heavier than it should’ve been that the team’s disbelief turned into shock. “Our first reaction was actually disbelief, amazement,” Kobe said, adding, “We certainly hadn’t expected to find gold.”
What started as a mundane groundwork project quickly escalated into a full-blown treasure hunt. The crew kept digging, uncovering more coins and eventually 49 gold bars, all of which were carefully logged and whisked away by police to a high-security federal vault.
The sheer scale of the find is hard to wrap your head around
Police shared photos of the haul laid out on a table, with the gold bars neatly arranged and a bucket overflowing with coins. The estimated value, according to local reports, sits at around €9 million – that’s over $10.4 million!
Site manager Mario put it bluntly: “After 33 years in the construction industry, this is the first time I’ve experienced anything like this.” He described the moment his team shouted, “We found gold!” as surreal. “I went to look and took the gold in my hands,” he said. “We also continued to dig up new coins and bars. Only then did what we had found really dawn.”
Of course, the big question was: where did this gold come from? Right now, nobody has a clue. The East Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office is leading an investigation, but so far, they’ve hit a dead end. “At this moment, it is not known where that gold comes from, nor to whom it legally belongs,” Prosecutor Hanne Ollevier said.
The building where the gold was found is owned by CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a Belgian charity that supports people in difficult situations. The organization’s director has already made it clear they’d love to see the treasure put to good use. “We hope that this treasure ends up in the right place and that this unexpected discovery can change the lives of many in a positive way,” the police said in their Facebook post, echoing that sentiment.
For the construction workers, the discovery is bittersweet
Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to come forward and claim the gold. If no one does, it could eventually be handed over to the state, or, in this case, the charity that owns the building. When asked if he’d considered keeping the gold, Mario was quick to shut down the idea. “It’s about so many coins and bars, that almost wouldn’t be possible,” he told VRT. “Besides, it would also be theft.”
Kobe, the young worker who first spotted the coins, admitted he’s still hoping for a finder’s fee. “That would be nice,” he said. It’s hard not to root for them, especially since they did the right thing by calling the police immediately instead of trying to sneak the gold out of the site.
The discovery has already sparked a wave of curiosity, with treasure hunters eyeing the construction site in hopes of finding something the crew missed. Police were quick to shut down those dreams, though. They warned that the site is fenced off and filled with “several dangerous pits.”
“Moreover, we have already passed by and everything is definitely gone… so certainly do not take irresponsible risks!” they said. It’s a fair warning, but you can’t blame people for being tempted. A $10 million gold stash is the kind of thing that turns even the most level-headed person into an amateur Indiana Jones.
For now, the gold sits in a high-security vault
Investigators are trying to piece together its origins. The fact that it was buried under a building owned by a charity adds another layer of intrigue. Was it hidden there decades ago by someone who never got the chance to retrieve it? Did it belong to a wealthy individual who met an untimely end? Or is there a more sinister explanation, like money laundering or stolen goods?
