Alex Trebek First, despite some rumors recently, Trebek has no plans to retire from the show just yet. He talked to host Chris Hardwick about what qualities he thinks it takes to be a great gameshow host, which he essentially boiled down to glibness, likability, and looking good in a suit. Hardwick told Trebek he wasn’t sure how anyone would be able to follow him after decades on the show, to which Trebek replied that he thinks Hardwick would make a good replacement, adding:
“There are a number of you guys out there — there are a number of young women who could take over. I did the Geography Bee in Washington DC for 25 years and I left it this past year and Soledad O’Brien is coming in to host it this year. You can be replaced. I can be replaced. It won’t be the same show exactly, but the rules are the same. The material will be the same. The contestants will be the same. The only thing different will be the guy — guy or gal reading the clues.”
Soledad O’Brien She’s the one replacing Trebek at the National Geography Bee for a reason. As a journalist O'Brien has built up years of credibility and is someone contestants and viewers would take seriously right out of the gate. The host of Jeopardy! doesn’t have know all the answers, but you want to believe they could, and O’Brien fits that bill perfectly.
Aisha Tyler Alright, so a little less focus on the “being taken seriously” thing with this pick, but hosting is a very specific skill and Aisha Tyler has it. She’s a comedian, so I’m sure her run as host of Jeopardy! wouldn’t be quite as serious as Trebek’s but she’s been great at hosting everything from The Soup to Whose Line Is It Anyway?, so I think she’s likely to be someone Trebek and the producers would consider when he does retire.
Jessica Chobot If Trebek thinks Chris Hardwick would make a good replacement, then he should also take a look at Jessica Chobot who hosts Nerdist News on Hardwick’s Nerdist YouTube channel. She’s every bit as glib and likable as Hardwick, although I imagine there would be a lot more questions about lightsabers and time travel than there have been in the past.
Sam Maggs This is a bit of an inside pick considering Sam is Geekosystem’s Weekend Editor and a The Mary Sue contributor, but she’d be crush the hosting job. Like Trebek she has her origins in Canadian television, and would probably show up on day one cosplaying a Trebek-stache.
Of course if Sam gets the job “Destroying the Patriarchy” would probably be a category on every episode.
Cara Santa Maria Cara Santa Maria is a science journalist known for her work with the Huffington Post. She’s also the host of Pivot TV’s Take Part Live, her own podcast Talk Nerdy to Me, and has made some memorable appearances on StarTalk Radio. Although she specializes in science, enough other topics have come up on Take Part Live to prove she’s well rounded enough to lead Jeopardy! after Trebek.
