Star Wars: Episode VII Character Descriptions Revealed?

Dateline reported today that the character descriptions for the new Star Wars film have already been sent out to agents, and now fans everywhere are speculating about the characters. Who will be stepping up to play the leads for the franchise’s seventh entry, directed by J.J. Abrams?

Vague, unmarked character descriptions are under the cut, so you have been warned (if you consider those spoilers).

Character descriptions are as follows:

A young man aged between 20 and 25, witty and smart, fit but not classically handsome,

Man in late twenties, also fit, but this one is handsome and confident.

Late teenage girl, independent, good sense of humour, also… physically fit .

Second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and physically fit.

Man in his forties, obviously physically fit, this one is a military type.

A man of around thirty or so, this one is an intellectual type.

Finally, a guy aged around seventy, strong opinions and tough.

Though the descriptions are incredibly vague, the mystery around who, exactly, these characters are has already been picked apart by fans across the web. After rumors that the new film would be based on Star Wars expanded universe canon, it would be feasible to guess that the young man and late teenage girl are Han and Leia’s children, Jacen and Jaina Solo.

This guess assumes that narrative basis for the story will be the expanded universe, however, and that is not yet confirmed. It’s worth noting that Jacen and Jaina are twins, and the ages listed in these descriptions don’t match up accordingly. However, it could be a way to throw fans off the scent, or even simply a casting preference that will not have bearing on the ages of the characters themselves.

Considering Abrams; infatuation with keeping his characters and plots hush-hush (Benedict Cumberbatchs Star Trek: Into Darkness character, for example?) it might take a while before we get any solid information about the cast of characters for Star Wars VII,  but considering this is a Disney film we could also be pleasantly surprised.

Abrams says to expect production on the movie to begin in 2014. It will probably take just as long for us to finally get an answer to whom these “physically fit” teens are supposed to be.

Two female characters? It’s an improvement over the other two trilogies at least.

    GUYS I’VE WORKED IT OUT

-A young man aged between 20 and 25, witty and smart, fit but not classically handsome: Luke Skywalker
-Man in late twenties, also fit, but this one is handsome and confident: Han Solo
-Late teenage girl, independent, good sense of humour, also… physically fit: Princess Leia*
-Second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and physically fit: R2-D2
-Man in his forties, obviously physically fit, this one is a military type: Chewbacca
-A man of around thirty or so, this one is an intellectual type: C-3PO
-Finally, a guy aged around seventy, strong opinions and tough: Obi-Wan Kenobi (ghost)

IT’S ALL SO CLEAR NOW, HOW COME NO ONE’S SPOTTED THE OBVIOUS RESEMBLANCES

*The explanation for the age discrepancy is that Alderaan’s orbit is slower than Tatooine’s, which is Expanded Universe canon as of this post.

I didn’t read the article because I want to avoid spoilers, but when I saw “Disney’s STAR WARS” I almost threw up! LOL

I don’t know who the characters are, all I see is 5 mature men with varied descriptions, and 2 tough/independent, fit teenage girls. Ick. I know there will be other people in the movie, but if the main characters are 2/7 female (and only young ones, at that), that is (sadly) perfectly in line with current trends. This is obviously really early, and they could do something great, but at the moment, I am disappointed.

I’d like to see Karl Urban as Kyle Katarn.

  • Rebecca Pahle

Or Talon Karrde. I’d lose it.

    So 7 characters.
2 female, both of which are “late teenage”
    5 male, spanning from 20 to 70.
    Yeah, this seems fresh,

You may be onto something! It’s their way of saying “we’re hiring for Star Wars, reply back for accurate info”! xD

  • Dan Griffin

I really do hope it’s going to based off the Legacy of the Force series.

  • Craig Oxbrow

    Physically physically physically fit.

  • Mark Brown

Personally, cheesy as it is, i can’t help but see Bruce Campbell as Talon Karrde.

(I “met” Karrde around the same time I met Autolycus, King of Thieves, and they kind of blurred together in my head. Fast-talking, charismatic scoundrel with a charming smile and all that.)

*still hoping for Allana Solo as lead hero*

I’ll bet you $100 that it has nothing to do with the EU. Is there a way to do this? There needs to be a website for stuff like this.

  • Mark Matson

Yeah, two females versus five males. That’s your basic Hollywood ratio right there.

  • Dave

So, intellectual and physically fit are mutually exclusive now…?

    Great-flipping-Force that’s an awesome thought.

  • frankenmouse

Yes. And “physically fit” means “Hollywood attractive.” And why are all of our female characters teens? There ARE women over the age of 30 in the universe.

We can already tell it’s a 5-to-2 male/female ratio, but who wants to bet on the ethnic ratio (racio?) My bet is one black male, most likely not the “lead” character, probably either the military type or the tough opinionated septuagenarian. Chance of black female or other ethnicity of either gender minimal, outside of secondary/tertiary characters.

I’d love to be proven wrong, of course – at least they don’t outright state any directions for ethnic background.
