Filming of Guardians of the Galaxy Has Officially Started, and Glenn Close Is Nova-Prime

And So It Begins

We previously heard that Glenn Close would be taking on the role of a leader in Guardians of The Galaxy, but now Marvel has issued a press release confirming that the actress will play Nova-Prime, supreme leader of the Nova Corps. Essentially, if John C. Reilly is Rhomann Day, the Agent Coulsen of Nova Corps, then Glenn Close is the Nick Fury of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Guardians of the Galaxy began filming recently in Shepperton Studios in the UK, and will continue filming at Longcross Studios and around London according to the official press release. Beyond Glenn Close as the military leader of currently unknown origins, the film also includes Karen Gillan as space pirate Nebula, Reilly as Rhomann Day, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Benicio del Toro as The Collector, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, and Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser. So far, there has been little news of who will be playing or voicing the characters Groot and Rocket Raccoon (a sentient alien plant and a raccoon, respectively), who will both be featured in the film.

While we now officially know that Close is the leader of the Nova Corps,  role that will no doubt show us just how formidable the actress can be, we still do not know much about the character beyond her rank. After all, Nova-Prime is a title, not a name. Reilly’s character may be human, but Close’s could easily be alien, as other Nova-Prime’s have been. More interestingly, Nova-Prime is generally a male character, as you can see at Marvel, so Close represents the movie breaking the mold in creating more roles for strong females.

From the press release, the movie also includes the involvement of individuals who have worked on many action and Marvel films in the past.

Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. The executive producers are Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jeremy Latcham, Alan Fine and Stan Lee; the co-producer is Nik Korda.

The creative team includes director of photography Ben Davis, BSC (“Wrath of the Titans”, “Kick-Ass”), production designer Charles Wood (“Thor: The Dark World”), BAFTA-nominated Editor Fred Raskin (“Django Unchained,” “Fast Five”) and Academy Award®-winning editor Hughes Winborne, A.C.E. (“The Help,” “Crash”), and Academy Award® winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Elizabeth The Golden Age”). The film will also shoot at Longcross Studios, and locations in and around London.
