To Boldly Go

Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and Benedict (Timothy Carlton) Cumberbatch in First Leaked Photos From the Set of Star Trek

MTV has recovered some set photos from the recently begun production of the sequel to J.J. AbramsStar Trek, and we’re betting that there are enough Star Trek fans and Sherlock fans in our audience that you’re slavering over any details about Benedict Cumberbatch‘s addition to the production.

We’re putting these behind the jump just in case, but there’s really nothing below here that you wouldn’t get from publicity photos or a trailer.

I mean aside, from the fact that Cumberbatch doesn’t appear to be wearing any effects makeup, and his ears are of an Earthly round, so we’re probably looking at a human, and not alien villain for this second outing.

Here’s Cumberbatch on the left, and Zoe Saldana on the right. Man. Those Starfleet skirts really are short, aren’t they?

And before you get your Shanter impressions out, we’ve been promised that Cumberbatch is not Khan.

Although it sure looks like the movie won’t be bereft of yelling, as Zachary Quinto lays on some classic moves.

Of course, there’s still no sign of this movie’s closest six-degrees connection to Doctor Who yet, but patience, young ensigns. It’ll happen.

LOVE.   I am a Star Wars geek to the bone, but the Abrams Trek is *so* good . . . can’t wait for this one.

No, I think it’s just a badly done seam.

“we’ve been promised that Cumberbatch is not Khan.”

    I’m still sulking about that…

Noooo!  Don’t make Benedict a villain!

Avenger and Stark Trek news in one day? Seems pretty good. Too bad there’s no pic of Karl Urban

Well, I’m usually on the side of evil anyway, so it’s like having Ben arbitrarily added to the team mid-match. Huzzah!

Khan is Indian, so casting Cumberbatch, while an interesting prospect, would have been whitewashing.

Benedict Cumberbatch is now in three of my five favourite things, Star Trek, Middle Earth, Sherlock Holmes. Now we just have to winkle him into Dr Who and Harry Potter and he will be as God to me.

I know original Star Trek was mega progressive for it’s time, and I know Abrams’ version is a reboot of the original story, but, why oh why couldn’t he have deviated a little bit and given Uhura a uniform that wasn’t a mini dress. You can’t make me believe that a woman would be asked to wear a uniform like that in the future.

My celeb crushes just collided. All is good in the world.

But why no sleeves on Uhura’s uniform? Are the ranks of Starfleet women indicated by their earrings? Or do they have bracelets or something? Tattoos?

The alt-text for the picture above says “vulcan death grip.” …Well holy shit, this movie’s getting dark.
