Live-Action Beauty and the Beast Gets a Release Date and an Emma Thompson

I bet Angela Lansbury is stoked.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Beauty and the Beast fans will have to wait a while before saying bonjour to Emma Watson, Josh Gad, Dan Stevens and Luke Evans: the live-action musical adaptation won’t be released until March 17th, 2017. Two years and a day, everyone! Start your transmogrified ottomans!

THR also reports that the movie is continuing to fill out its cast; Emma Thompson will play Mrs. Potts and Kevin Kline has joined on as Maurice.

Although I’m never one to say no to more Emma Thompson or Kevin Kline, it’s disturbing that, much like the live-action Cinderella and Maleficent, Beauty and the Beast‘s cast is so far overwhelmingly white. Disney’s live-action reboots are a shameless money grab, but you’d think they’d at least have the decency to disguise the financial bottom line by giving these reboots some modern updates (realistically-proportioned characters, for example!). Sure, there are Disney princess films with roles originally written for people of color, but young movie-goers shouldn’t have to wait until the live-action movies cycle around to rebooting more recent films to see themselves represented on screen.
