‘You’re deluded’: Benedict Cumberbatch admitted to running a red light. Then spent 10 minutes arguing with a stranger who wouldn’t let it go
A polite road rage incident.

Benedict Cumberbatch got into a full-blown shouting match with a stranger after allegedly running a red light on his bike in London. The whole thing was caught on video, and it’s honestly hard to look away from, partly because it’s Benedict Cumberbatch, and partly because the argument escalated into something way more dramatic than it needed to be.
The road rage incident happened near King’s Cross Station last week, around 5:30 p.m. In the video, Cumberbatch, wearing a grey jacket, abandons his bike and walks over to confront the other cyclist, who’s wearing a cap and a mask. “You’re deluded, you’re lying,” the masked rider tells Cumberbatch. “I was behind you the entire time.”
According to Page Six, the actor fired back, accusing the man of “verbally” abusing him, which only makes the other guy double down. “Oh no, I verbally abused the guy who completely repeatedly broke the law,” the cyclist shoots back sarcastically. At one point, Cumberbatch admits, “I did it once,” but the other guy isn’t buying it. He accuses the Doctor Strange star of running two other red lights, which Cumberbatch flat-out denies.
Bystanders watched the whole exchange in disbelief
The argument drags on for a full 10 minutes, with the two of them blocking a lane while school kids and other bystanders watch in disbelief. An eyewitness who recorded the whole thing called it “crazy” and said it “almost felt like it had been staged.” They added that the masked cyclist seemed like some kind of “vigilante” on London’s streets.
He was clearly shocked when he realized who he was yelling at, but he didn’t back down. “He was really taken aback when he saw it was Benedict Cumberbatch, but he doubled down on his rage,” the witness said. The whole scene was chaotic, with the two of them going at each other “about five times” before the masked rider finally left.
What’s wild is how Cumberbatch managed to switch gears after the fight. Despite the meltdown, he still took time to pose for photos with young fans who recognized him. According to The Standard, the eyewitness said he was “lovely” with the kids, telling them, “Not at the moment, in a minute,” when they asked for pictures. The kids were undoubtedly awestruck.
The incident raises questions about road rage encounters involving celebrities
The drawn-out argument raises questions about how these kinds of confrontations play out, especially when one person is famous. The eyewitness even admitted that while they didn’t condone dangerous cycling, the masked rider’s decision to follow Cumberbatch and escalate the situation was “worse than Benedict slowly cutting that light.”
It’s a weird dynamic. On one hand, running a red light is dangerous, but on the other, chasing someone down for 10 minutes of public arguing doesn’t exactly solve the problem either. Cumberbatch’s team hasn’t commented on the incident yet, which isn’t surprising. But the video has already made the rounds online, and it’s hard not to cringe at how quickly a simple traffic violation turned into a full-blown spectacle.
At the end of the day, it’s a reminder that road rage can happen to anyone, even a celebrity. The fact that the popular actor was able to pivot from a heated argument to posing for photos with fans is impressive. The kids who got their pictures probably won’t even remember the argument in a few years, but they’ll definitely remember meeting the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Dr. Strange.
As for the masked cyclist, he’s probably just happy he got his point across, even if it didn’t exactly go the way he planned. Running a red light is a big deal, especially in a busy area like King’s Cross, but turning it into a 10-minute public debate might not have been the best way to handle it. Still, it’s hard to blame him for calling Cumberbatch out. If you see someone breaking the rules, it’s natural to want to say something.
