Woman Spots ‘Cute Crochet Top’ at a Store, but the Manager Allegedly Declines to Sell It to Her. Apparently Only Skinny Girls Get to Wear the Clothes
He messed with the wrong woman and her best friend
Erica Wall (@erica_wall) in a TikTok video recalls an incident from three years ago when she walked into a store on the Amalfi Coast with three of her friends and saw a cute crochet top she wanted to try. However, the manager refused, saying that it was too small for her.
Wall said that when she kept insisting the top would fit, the man took it from her hand and put it behind the counter. “I was just stunned. What? This has never happened to me,” Wall said before mentioning that she even offered to buy the top directly without trying it, but the manager refused that as well.
Wall then walked out of the store. She said one of her friends was standing outside, and she told her everything that had happened. Then she apparently stormed inside the store and confronted the ladies behind the counter. They allegedly told Wall’s friend that the store manager only wants “skinny girls wearing their designs.”
“Those Are Some FRIENDS”
Wall said her friend rained down heavily on the ladies over her mistreatment, accusing them of being bad people and threatening to write a bad review for the store. Additionally, she also supposedly told them that she would be standing outside the store and asking people not to come inside.
Some people in the comments section of Wall’s post appreciated Wall’s friend for taking her side and defending her, unlike this Iowa woman’s friends who didn’t. One user wrote, “Ok but those are some FRIENDS.” Another said, “That’s the kind of best friend you keep forever.”
A few others shared their own experiences of being denied access to items because of their weight. One user commented, “I was 17 when this happened to me in Italy .. in a tshirt shop .. A TSHIRT SHOP .. buying a medium tshirt.” Another user recalled, “EXACT same thing happened to me in Positano last year. I wanted to treat myself to a €200 dress and they were so awful to me. So I walked down to the boardwalk and found a €30 dress that was cuter, shop owner was way nicer, AND it fit me.”
There’s a Silver Lining to All of This
While Wall was taken aback at the moment the incident happened, several years later she appears confident as ever. Toward the end of the video, she spoke about the incident, remembering it and stressing the need for supportive friends who would stand up for you.
She also joked about being 22 weeks pregnant and how the top wouldn’t fit her anymore. A quick look through her profile shows that she is happily married to her husband and is eagerly awaiting the birth of her first child.
Can a Store Refuse to Sell a Product to You, Despite It Being in Stock?
Even if you don’t like it, a store can choose not to sell you an item. A Quora thread discusses this topic in detail. One individual writes, “Yes of course a store can refuse to sell you something. If they could not refuse, then children could buy alcohol and cigarettes. People prohibited from buying a gun COULD buy a gun. Stores can also legally limit quantities purchased.”
Another person wrote, “Yes—stores generally can refuse to sell you an item, but that right is limited by anti-discrimination and contract laws and by specific circumstances.” Given this, the store that Wall went to clearly discriminated against her because of her weight, which is unacceptable. Unfortunately, society remains obsessed with external appearances, to the extent that some workplaces hire individuals based on their looks, including weight.
