Woman sees Trader Joe’s Takis going viral on TikTok and convinces her whole family to get separate bags, then it backfires spectacularly

Was the mom right to ban it forever?

Riding the wave of viral trends can occasionally deliver a jackpot. But for one household, following the social media hype around Trader Joe’s Takis dupes led to a full-blown gastrointestinal shutdown.

TikTok creator Ny’Onna Mae (@nyonnam05spam) broke down the culinary catastrophe in a Get Ready With Me (GRWM) storytime video. After watching endless praise on her feed for Trader Joe’s Chili & Lime Rolled Corn Tortilla Chips, she successfully lobbied her mother for a dedicated shopping run.

Mae explained that sharing was out of the question among the siblings. So, their mother bought each child their own individual bag, alongside frozen soup dumplings and general staples. But that well-intentioned generosity allegedly went south just hours later.

A midnight Trader Joe’s snack session triggered severe stomach cramps

The trouble began during the evening when Mae tore into her personal bag of rolled chips right before heading to bed. The late-night treat went down easily enough during the initial snack session. However, the regret set in almost immediately after she finished.

“I lay down to go to sleep. My stomach is cramping like crazy,” Mae recalled, recounting how the intense abdominal pain derailed her rest. “At that point, I could not even go to sleep because of how bad my stomach was hurting.” She then spent the remainder of the night tossing and turning, assuming she had simply overdone it with the late-night citrus and spice.

Come sunrise, it became glaringly obvious that she was far from the only casualty in the house. When the alarm went off for school, the full weight of the individual snack bags came crashing down on the rest of the family.

All three siblings turned up sick in the morning

Mae’s younger sister reportedly woke up violently ill, spending the hours leading up to class vomiting uncontrollably. Meanwhile, her brother allegedly began dealing with agonizing digestive gridlock.

Despite clearly struggling in real time, the brother initially attempted to save face by insisting the chips had nothing to do with his condition. “He was being in denial. He was like, ‘Oh no, it didn’t hurt my stomach, this and that.’ He’s lying… That was cap for sure. And he finally admitted that it was the Trader Joe’s Takis that was making his stomach hurt.”

With every sibling officially down for the count, the shopping experiment came to an unceremonious conclusion. Mae noted that the collective morning wreckage permanently severed their relationship with the snack. Her mother also reportedly instituted a permanent household ban on the Takis that remains active to this day.

It is easy to point fingers at the grocery shelf when your entire living room starts resembling a pediatric clinic. But even if nothing else, Mae’s household cautionary tale at least proves that sometimes sharing a snack might be the only built-in defense mechanism keeping you from calling out sick the next day.
