Woman shocked after finding what her ‘lab-grown diamond’ jewelry is made of: ‘literally spent so much money’

Multiple levels of verification need

A woman was surprised to discover that her so-called “lab-grown diamond” jewelry wasn’t genuine, sparking conversations about jewelry marketing and the importance of being informed about your purchases. Bridget (bridgetmlevine) shared in a TikTok video that she took the diamond jewelry she bought from a TikTok seller called The Diamond Guy NYC for testing. “I just went to get this diamond that I bought off of TikTok Shop tested,” Bridget said while holding up a piece of paper that looked like a report.

The video then cuts to Bridget on location as a man tests her diamond’s authenticity. As the tester’s light moves to the right, Bridget asks if that’s a good sign or a bad one. The man says that the item she brought in was moissanite. Bridget says, “What?” in disbelief, and the video promptly cuts back to her in her car, holding the paper from earlier.

“I bought this diamond. They said, ‘It was not moissanite; it was a real lab-grown diamond.’ I just had it tested, and it tested. It was moissanite,” Bridget said, summarizing the whole incident. Bridget also said she would confront the store she bought it from since she spent a lot of money on the “fake lab diamond.”

“You probably do have a lab diamond!”

Bridget’s video received more than 600 comments, and they all said different things. Some people raised concerns about the tester used, noting that it gave incorrect results. One person said, “I’m a jewelry appraiser, I have that tester, a lot of lab diamonds test as Moissanite on it, I haven’t been able to figure out why. You probably do have a lab diamond!” Another wrote, “It is a real lab grown diamond. Those pens are not accurate. They sometimes say moissanite is a real diamond as well. Go get someone to put it in the Sherlock for testing.”

I got scammed and this is not ok @The Diamond Guy NYC Before you buy any “fake diamond” they need to test it with a tester – it Doesn’t matter that there is a “number” engraved on the stone saying it’s a diamond. What matters is that it TESTS for a diamond. It’s like buying a designer bag that has a “serial card” with it- ANYONE can make serial cards for fake bags or fake diamonds – what matters is if it’s ACTUALLY authentic and REAL. Be smarter than me please. #tiktokshop

In her video caption, Bridget mentioned that the item she purchased had an “engraving.” A few commenters referred to it and asked her to get a second opinion. One person noted, “If it has the certification number on it, then it’s a bigger problem with IGI. And I can promise they aren’t going to certify a moissanite as a diamond. You need a second opinion from a jeweler that doesn’t use a cheap diamond tester.”

Some people, on the other hand, raised concerns about Bridget buying expensive items on TikTok. One person wrote, “Why are we buying diamonds off TikTok?!” Another said, “First thing…… who’s buying diamonds off of TikTok?”

The seller’s response

Unlike in other cases where sellers often evade responsibility, The Diamond Guy NYC did not. In a TikTok video, they addressed the issue with Bridget’s diamond and urged her to get a second opinion. The man also showed receipts, sharing screenshots of their chats with Bridget, and noted that the company has consistently been eager to resolve the matter by offering jewelry testing and a refund.

He also emphasized the need for meaningful conversations with Bridget to solve the problem. Bridget hasn’t addressed The Diamond Guy NYC’s video yet.
