Black Woman From Missouri Goes to a Chinese Restaurant. The First Thing the Waiter Says Is, ‘Speak English,’ and Then Makes Her Sit by the Bathroom

Dining out is usually built on simple expectations. Customers expect to be welcomed, shown a table, and treated with the same level of courtesy as everyone else. If they believe they were treated differently, the visit can leave a lasting impression long after they leave the restaurant.

Experiences like these can be difficult to judge from a single video because only one perspective is available. Even so, they often fuel conversations about fairness and customer treatment.

A recent TikTok video shared by @lifestylewith_bebe has sparked that kind of discussion. The creator’s account of a visit to a Chinese restaurant has drawn both sympathy and skepticism, with viewers questioning what may have happened.

It only got more uncomfortable from there

The TikTok creator shared what she described as an upsetting visit to a Chinese restaurant that left her questioning how they were treated. She says the experience began almost immediately after arriving and became increasingly uncomfortable as they tried to get seated.

In the video, the creator tells viewers, “guys we’re just sitting here and wondering what just happened because we went to this restaurant this Chinese restaurant and the first thing the waiter told us was speak English speak in English.”

The creator says the employee “has a thick a– accent.” She alleges he again instructed them to “speak in English.”

The creator recalls other customers entering the restaurant shortly after they did. She says those customers, whom she describes as white, were acknowledged by staff and directed to a table before she and her companion received any assistance.

She says she reminded restaurant employees that they were also waiting to be seated. She claims staff responded by telling them to “go find anywhere you want to go see.”

She says they eventually ended up sitting at a table near the bathroom. Referring to where they were seated, she says, “it’s black history like this is by the bathroom.” The video ends without clearly explaining whether they completed their meal or chose to leave the restaurant.

Many viewers responded with sympathy and encouraged the creator not to return. One commenter wrote, “We must never allow people to treat us that way. You should have tell them what you thought about them and their restaurant and walk away.” Another added, “I’m so sorry this happened.”

Others questioned parts of the story, particularly the explanation about the seating. One commenter asked, “Wait I’m confused they told you to go sit wherever you wanted to sit, but you said they sat you in the back?” Another wrote, “they told you to sit anywhere you want. but then they sat you in the beck by the bathroom, makes no sense, yet you sat down anyway. then he got mad.”

Several viewers also repeatedly asked the creator to identify the restaurant, while others said the video reminded them of other restaurant experiences that raised questions about customer treatment. Similar discussions have followed viral claims of unequal customer treatment, where customers also believed they were treated differently from others.
