Woman Records a Tense Dollar Tree Confrontation. The Manager’s Actions Leave Her Questioning What Was Happening in the Store: ‘One-Star Experience’

Another unhappy customer.

A tense Dollar Tree checkout confrontation caught on camera is making waves online after a customer posted a video calling it a “one-star experience.” The clip, shared on TikTok by user @fabiothedoggo, shows a manager raising her voice, handling items carelessly, and speaking unprofessionally in front of other shoppers. The video has already racked up more than 218,000 views and over 10,400 likes, sparking a bigger conversation about customer service in discount retail.

The customer films the exchange at the register, where the manager appears frustrated. In the background, you can hear her saying things like, “We gotta take it off the shelf. We gotta go behind y’all and get the s— off the shelf. Cause we don’t sell one same item in the Dollar Tree.” The tone is sharp, and the way she’s handling the customer’s items doesn’t exactly scream professionalism.

The caption on the video doesn’t hold back either. It reads, “One-star experience at Dollar Tree. Manager raised her voice, handled my items carelessly, and spoke unprofessionally in front of customers. I’ve filed a corporate complaint and am waiting for a response. This isn’t the first location I’ve had issues with.”

These kinds of interactions are common at discount stores

Dollar Tree, in particular, has been under the microscope lately for everything from staffing issues to inconsistent pricing. This video is just the latest in a string of viral moments that highlight the frustrations shoppers face when service falls short. The comments on the post reflect that frustration.

One user wrote, “Why do employees get so angry over this? It’s not like it’s coming out of their pockets.” Another chimed in, “Management’s job to check and make sure there’s no penny items on the shelf. 100% their own fault.” And let’s be real, no one wants to feel like they’re being scolded for something that isn’t their fault.

Dollar Tree’s reputation has taken a hit in recent years, and it’s not just because of viral videos. According to the New York Post, the chain has been rolling out price scanners in stores, a move that’s left some shoppers scratching their heads. After all, the store’s whole brand was built on the idea that everything costs a dollar. But with inflation and rising costs, Dollar Tree has had to adjust.

Back in November 2021, the company introduced items priced at $3 and $5, and now you can even find things for as much as $10. That’s a far cry from the one-dollar promise that made the store famous.

The price scanners aren’t entirely new

Some states, like Massachusetts, have had them for years. In fact, Massachusetts passed a law in 2012 requiring grocery stores over 5,000 square feet to have at least one scanner in every location. The law was designed to cut costs for stores by eliminating the need for individual price stickers on every item. Instead, stores could rely on shelf labels and scanners to keep things accurate.

It’s a system that’s worked well for some shoppers. One Facebook user noted, “We have these in California. I’m glad. Whenever I see an item with a red sticker on it means it’s not priced as 1.25. So [the] scanner will show.”

For those who prefer to skip the in-store scanners, Dollar Tree’s app has a built-in barcode scanner. You just download the app, tap the barcode icon, and scan items right from your phone. It’s a handy feature if you want to double-check prices before heading to the register.

The app even lets you save items to a “My Favorites” list, which is great for keeping track of deals. Of course, you’ll need to give the app access to your camera for it to work, but that’s a small trade-off for avoiding surprises at checkout.

Is Dollar Tree struggling to keep up with its own identity?

On one hand, Dollar Tree is trying to modernize and adapt to rising costs. On the other, it’s dealing with the fallout of those changes, like frustrated customers and viral complaints. The TikTok video is a perfect example of how quickly a single bad experience can spread and shape public perception. For a company that’s built its brand on affordability and simplicity, these kinds of moments are a reminder that customer service can make or break a shopping experience.

It’s not just about the prices anymore. Shoppers expect a certain level of respect and professionalism, even at discount stores. When that doesn’t happen, they’re quick to call it out, whether it’s through a corporate complaint or a viral video.

The manager in the TikTok clip might not have realized how her actions would be perceived, but the internet has a way of holding people accountable. And in this case, it’s clear that Dollar Tree has some work to do if it wants to keep its customers happy.

The video’s popularity also speaks to a broader trend. Social media has given consumers a platform to share their experiences, good and bad, with a global audience. A single video can spark a conversation, put pressure on a company, and even lead to real change. For Dollar Tree, this latest viral moment is just another reminder that in today’s world, every customer interaction counts.
