Woman Conducts a Great Sniff and Carries on Serving Customers. Then She’s Caught Raiding the Register
There are some basic things customers expect from restaurant workers, and clean hands are one of them. But customers don’t always know what happens behind the counter. Sometimes, security footage shows more than anyone expected.
That is what happened in a video now circulating on Reddit. The footage was reportedly being checked because someone had been stealing money at work. But while looking for the person responsible, something else caught people’s attention.
Reddit user InsaneMocktail shared the video to the r/trashy subreddit on Aug. 23 with the title, “They were looking to find out who was stealing money and saw something much worse.” The footage shows a woman behind the counter at what appears to be a food-service business. Neither the worker nor the business has been identified.
They thought the stealing was bad until they saw this
Text over the footage reads, “The time we were trying to figure out who had been stealing.” The worker can be seen standing beside an open cash register and handling what appears to be money. Later in the video, however, she repeatedly appears to put a hand inside the back of her pants before bringing her fingers toward her face and mouth.
Exactly what she touches or puts in her mouth cannot be determined from the footage. But because she appears to work around food, money, and a register, the video raises an obvious hygiene question about what workers may touch before handling customers’ food. That concern quickly became a bigger focus for viewers than the alleged missing cash.
Customers also have to trust that the items they use have been properly cleaned before reaching their table. That trust becomes harder when footage shows questionable hygiene practices happening out of customers’ sight.
For Reddit users watching the clip, the immediate concern was everything the worker could potentially touch after putting her hand inside her pants. “Never eat your fries straight out the bag or un-sheathing the straw,” one person commented, while another wrote, “That is why you never put money in your mouth!”
Others couldn’t get past what they had just watched. “That is f*cking FOUL!! I’m never eating fast food again,” one viewer wrote. Another asked, “What IS wrong with people?” A third simply responded, “What a terrible day to have eyes.”
Some viewers focused on how easily questionable hygiene can spread to shared surfaces. “This is why I sanitize my hands on anything the public touches lol,” one commenter wrote. Another had a much shorter reaction: “Ew…”
The alleged theft also didn’t go unnoticed. “Bro…name and shame. That’s f*cking disgusting,” one person wrote. Another commenter shared their own experience, writing, “I did this once as a supervisor in slots at a casino during the 80s.” They said security cameras caught a cashier stealing from another worker’s open drawer.
Despite being newly shared on Reddit, the surveillance footage itself appears to be much older. The timestamp visible on the recording shows 2018, meaning the incident does not appear to have happened recently. The old footage has instead resurfaced online and is now getting a new round of attention.
That distinction is important because little information about the original incident is available. It is unclear where the footage was recorded, who the worker was, what happened to her afterward, or whether the alleged theft resulted in any disciplinary or legal action. The Reddit upload also does not identify the food-service business.
Still, the age of the video hasn’t stopped people from reacting to what it shows. Whoever originally reviewed the surveillance footage may have been looking for missing money, but for many of the people seeing it years later, the hygiene issue became much harder to ignore.
