Teen files theft report after boyfriend’s mom allegedly takes her bracelet, but the mom says she wants to be arrested
A little bracelet with a lot of meaning.

A 17-year-old girl filed a theft report after her boyfriend’s mother allegedly took her bracelet. According to the teenager, the woman refused to return it even after learning the police were involved, reportedly saying she wanted to get arrested instead.
In a recent post on Reddit’s r/AITAH, user u/krowwashere explained that she had worn the bracelet every day since receiving it as a gift from her brother last year, shortly before he left for work. She only took it off for a belt test in her sport, asking her 17-year-old boyfriend to keep it safe in his bag. Unfortunately, the bracelet never made it back to her wrist.
Later on, the boyfriend discovered that several belongings, including the bracelet, had disappeared from his bag. His mother allegedly gave conflicting explanations about what happened to it, prompting the teenage girl to eventually contact police. Despite filing a report, she remained unsure whether pursuing the matter was worth the trouble it could cause her boyfriend’s family. A simple bracelet had somehow triggered a chain of problems.
The boyfriend’s mom had some explaining to do
According to the Redditor, her boyfriend’s 60-year-old mother frequently searched his belongings because she suspected him of using drugs, despite his excellent grades. The teenager said the woman was already unfriendly toward her son’s friends and didn’t even know the two were dating.
After the belt test, the girl had forgotten to ask for her bracelet back. Her boyfriend reportedly showed his girlfriend the bracelet inside his bag during a video call and promised to return it the following morning. Instead, he discovered that his mother had apparently conducted another bag inspection and allegedly taken out several things, such as his lotion, cologne, and his girlfriend’s bracelet.
When confronted, the mother allegedly denied taking the bracelet before claiming she had handed it over to police. The teenage girl checked with the local police department, but officers reportedly had no record of receiving it. An attempt to talk to her boyfriend’s mother over the phone wasn’t exactly productive, either. The woman reportedly blamed the teenager for the argument with her son and said she didn’t want her respect.
The Redditor said police advised her to give the woman another chance to return the bracelet or file a theft report. When the mother refused and declared she wanted to be arrested, the teenager filed the report. However, it is worth noting that filing a police report in the US doesn’t automatically lead to criminal charges, as prosecutors generally review evidence before proceeding.
That said, there’s no indication anyone was arrested or charged, and the poster has not specified her location. What she did state clearly though was that her boyfriend encouraged her to pursue the matter.
Unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t sell sentimental value
The boyfriend’s father offered to buy the girl a replacement bracelet from Amazon, but that wasn’t quite the solution she was looking for. A new bracelet might look similar, but Amazon doesn’t sell the sentimental value of the piece of jewelry from her sibling.
While sentimental value may seem abstract, there is research that explains why some belongings possess value beyond their price tags. A 2021 review available through the National Library of Medicine found that meaningful possessions can help people preserve and recall personal memories.
The teenager said she was willing to drop the matter if the mother returned her bracelet, but she allegedly continued refusing. Although the girl had already filed a theft report with police, she wasn’t interested in suing or creating financial problems for her boyfriend’s family, adding that his mother is a nurse.
For now, the bracelet’s whereabouts remain a mystery. The boyfriend’s father may be able to replace the jewelry, but replacing the value of the original one is not something you can add to cart.
