One of the most anticipated movies of this spring, Everything Everywhere All At Once, is a take on the multiverse that doesn’t feature any Marvel superheroes—just a family and its complicated intergenerational relationships, with a side of a failing laundromat and IRS auditing.
Written and directed by duo Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert—known collectively as the Daniels—who debuted as directors and writers in 2016 with (the delightfully surreal) Swiss Army Man, Everything Everywhere All At Once was described as “fantastically inventive, entertaining, and emotionally grounded” at its premiere at the Austin SXSW Film Festival.
Everything Everywhere All At Once tells the story of Evelyn, played by the divine Michelle Yeoh, who is trying to find a way to save her business, her marriage, and her relationship with her daughter all at once. When she learns that the multiverse exists, though, she embarks on a journey through all the other realities, and across multiple versions of herself, to find a way to defeat another version of Joy, her daughter, before she destroys everything.
The movie is receiving stellar reviews so far. It’s currently certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with an overall score of 97%, and the website says that it “lives up to its title with an expertly calibrated assault on the senses” (even though there are also some that say that it’s maybe too much of everything all at once). Yeoh’s performance is being adored left and right, with critics saying that she was born to play the part of the quick-acting heroine—plus, it’s yet another chance to see her use her martial skills. Which immediately makes any movie an amazing one in my book. Michelle Yeoh, ma’am, I have literally never been the same since watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I was like, ten, and maybe way too young to watch it, but still fascinated by it to no end.
So, where can you watch Everything Everywhere All At Once?
The movie had a limited early run in the United States on March 25th, and then it opened for wide release on April 8th.
At the moment of its release, it was unclear which streaming service would pick it up, but some have started to get their hands on it. Since the start of June, Everything Everywhere All At Once has been available for purchase on both Prime Video and Apple TV+. Buying it through Apple will also grant you access to a special, and previously-unreleased, eight-minute video filled with bloopers from the movie’s principal photography.
