When Will We Get to See the “Darker” SDCC Avengers: Doomsday Trailer?

Just six days after Avengers: Doomsday‘s first trailer went live online, Marvel Studios turned up at San Diego Comic-Con with a brand new one. More than 6,500 fans watched the Hall H-exclusive footage, expecting an extended version of last week’s trailer. Instead, Kevin Feige unveiled a darker, far more Doom-centric trailer packed with several new reveals. The only question now is: when will we get to see it?

If you ignore the online leaks of shaky camera footage, and the AI recreations some people have put on social media, then there is really only one way to see the new trailer, and that’s when Marvel Studios finally releases it. Sadly, the news only gets worse from here, as Marvel will likely wait at least a couple of months before releasing the footage publicly. However, rumors suggest the studio planned to screen it before this weekend’s big Marvel release.

Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens this weekend in cinemas around the world, the trailer accompanying it will most likely be the one released last week on Marvel Studios’ social media accounts. We’ve been here before, with Marvel bringing something new to SDCC, only to hold it back from the public until it’s ready to release it properly. No studio releases two trailers within a couple of weeks of each other when the movie itself is still several months away, so it’s probably going to be October before we get to see more returning X-Men, mighty Avengers, and an all-powerful Doctor Doom.

What Happens in the New Trailer for Avengers: Doomsday?

Descriptions of the SDCC footage make one thing clear: this trailer packs the same kind of punch as the main Avengers: Infinity War trailer did in 2018. Sue Storm explains more about Doom, revealing how losing “everything he loved” transformed his kind and caring nature.

The focus of the trailer then shifts entirely to showing the might of the MCU’s new villain, with footage of a destroyed New York echoing to Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards demanding to know if Doom was responsible — to which Robert Downey Jr.’s new Marvel character responds that they have all been living “stolen lives,” and that it is now time to “give them back.” There is no further elaboration on this, but many have speculated that it could relate to the opening of the multiverse in the first season of Loki, or something linked to Steve Rogers’ decision to live out his life with Peggy Carter after returning the Infinity Stones.

The rest of the trailer plays out as you’d expect, with quick-cut glimpses of the heroes with a major part in the story, such as Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Patrick Stewart in what is reportedly his last ever movie role as Professor X, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, the Thunderbolts, the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, and more. This is a trailer that feels exactly like a big build-up preview, which is why we won’t be seeing it released just yet, if at all.

The Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Fans Saw May Not Be the One They Get

Feige is no stranger to all this, and he will know as well as anyone that leaks from SDCC would put the footage out into the world regardless. This means Marvel could release a completely different version of the trailer when it eventually drops, rather than the footage attendees watched. Regardless, the push towards the conclusion of the multiverse saga has truly begun, and this December, Avengers: Doomsday will pave the way for the future of the franchise.
