‘I love Delta’: Woman tells people why she flies with the airline after discovering a little-known policy when her bag broke
She claimed she was given a replacement suitcase straight away

A woman on TikTok claimed that she was given a free suitcase from Delta Airlines after her suitcase was broken during transport. The woman said that the free item was given to her due to a little-known policy that the airline has.
TikToker “@meganlvincent” told her viewers that, after getting off her plane, she picked up her suitcase from baggage and noticed that a wheel had come off while it was being transported. She said that she then went to talk to a Delta employee: “I go up to the woman, and she gives me a completely new bag.”
“This is why you fly Delta,” the TikToker said, before showing the black suitcase she claimed she had been given by the airline for free. “I love Delta,” Megan added.
Delta Airline policy regarding suitcases broken during transit
The Delta website states that if a passenger’s bag is lost or damaged during transit, they can submit a claim “to potentially repair or replace it.” The website advises customers on what to do to get a replacement bag. First, they must visit the Delta Baggage Service Office to report the damaged bag within 6 hours of arrival for domestic tickets and seven days for international tickets, or else the claim will not be accepted.
Customers must then keep hold of their reference number provided by the service office to fill out the claims form on the website, where they will need to select the “Damaged Bag Claim” and include the relevant receipts for reimbursement.
The airline also states that Delta will help passengers reimburse items missing from a suitcase or a lost suitcase entirely.
Other airlines’ policies on bag replacement
According to Travelbulletin.com, less than 1% of the over 250 million checked bags on US flights are lost or damaged. Data from the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics found that American Airlines had the highest number of incidents, with just over 16 million. Delta had over 800,000 cases of lost or damaged bags.
However, Delta is not the only airline to have a policy for compensating passengers for damaged or lost bags. The Department of Transportation regulations state that “airlines are required to compensate passengers if their bags are lost, delayed, or damaged.”
According to the DOT website, airlines are responsible for the reimbursement of passengers’ bags if they are lost or damaged during transport, meaning the policy is shared amongst all US airlines. If the airline refuses to consider a bag lost after an unreasonable period of time, then it “could be subject to enforcement action by the DOT.”
