When Does ‘Kirby and the Forgotten Land’ Release?

When can Car Kirby come into my life?

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is perhaps the most anticipated title on the Nintendo Switch this spring. And that’s really saying something, because the Switch’s release docket is loaded. For example, there are certain corners of the internet losing their minds over Square Enix’s new tactical RPG Triangle Strategy (out today!). But when does our beautiful pink balloon boy fully enter our lives and suck money out of our wallets?

Kirby and the Forgotten Land comes out on March 25, 2022. Which is so, so soon! And in more good news, Nintendo just dropped a surprise demo of the game’s first three levels. That’s enough to cover the first world, including the boss fight. If you pace yourself with a level a week until the full release, you’re golden.

The hype around Kirby and the Forgotten Land goes deeper than the excitement over Kirby’s new ability to awkwardly swallow a car. (It’s called Mouthful Mode, and it’s a delight.) Despite the franchise debuting in 1992, Forgotten Land will be the first proper Kirby game that allows players to explore 3D landscapes. Every Kirby heretofore has been a side-scroller, so this breaks exciting new ground for the franchise.

Despite the hot associations with the words “open world,” Forgotten Land is probably better compared to Super Mario 3D World than giant jaunts like Breath of the Wild. But Super Mario 3D World—which was re-released on the Switch last year—is fantastic. And as long as I can waddle around a seemingly post-apocalyptic landscape with a vending machine shoved up Kirby’s mouth, I’ll be quite pleased.
