Former Chick-Fil-a Worker Reveals the Bizarre Motive Behind His $80,000 Mac and Cheese Refund Heist

It’s not every day you hear about a heist involving comfort food, but the story of Keyshun Jones, 23, and his $80,000 mac and cheese scheme is definitely one for the books. According to UNILAD, the former employee has opened up about why he decided to target the popular menu item after being fired from his job at a Chick-fil-A in Grapevine, Texas. The situation started with a simple visit to grab a bite with friends and spiraled into a legal nightmare that landed him behind bars.
The incident first caught the attention of the restaurant operator, Jarvis Boyd, back in November 2025. Boyd noticed that the store’s accounts weren’t balancing correctly, which eventually led to a formal report being filed with the local police.
Investigators took a deep dive into the security footage and discovered that Jones had been slipping behind the counter to use an unattended register. Over a period of months, he managed to ring up roughly 800 orders of mac and cheese trays, only to issue refunds for those same orders directly to his personal credit cards.
But why the mac and cheese?
When asked why he specifically chose the mac and cheese for this massive operation, Jones provided a very practical reason. “As good and delicious as our mac and cheese is, it is unfortunately one of our most expensive items,” he noted.
Since each tray costs about $100 when ordered for delivery, it was the perfect candidate for someone looking to inflate the numbers quickly. The total amount stolen ended up being just over $80,000, a staggering figure for a side dish scam.
Despite how calculated the crime might appear to outsiders, Jones insists that it wasn’t something he had planned out in advance. “Everyone thinks it was more premeditated, ‘Oh, I went in there with a plan.’ That was definitely not the case,” he explained during a recent conversation from the Tarrant County jail.
He claims that he had been at the establishment with friends and simply saw an opportunity when he noticed a register left unattended. He attributes the entire ordeal to a moment of weakness fueled by his frustration over losing his job of seven years. “I let anger, as most people do, let anger and those feelings get in the way, and I went, and I made a bad decision,” he added.
It took a few months for the police to catch up with Jones
Following the initial discovery of the theft, Jones managed to evade arrest for several months. Law enforcement eventually caught up with him on April 17, 2026, thanks to the combined efforts of the Texas Attorney General’s Fugitive Task Force and the Fourth Worth Police Department.
He was initially facing a potential 10-year prison sentence, but his legal team was able to negotiate a plea deal. On August 13, 2026, he was sentenced to three years in prison after being charged with money laundering, property theft, and evading arrest.
Jones felt that the legal process was fair once his side of the story was heard. “My attorney spoke with the DA, and we kind of explained everything. We all came to an agreement where it wasn’t one of those heinous acts … They got to know, ‘This guy isn’t what we all thought he would be,’” he said.
Even after everything that happened, he maintains that he still has a deep affection for the company. He started working there when he was just 15 years old, and he views it as his primary career path.
Jones is aiming to move past this experience
He hopes to eventually return to the workforce. He describes himself as a goofy, fun, and kind-spirited person who is misunderstood by the public narrative. While he admits that the Chick-fil-A branch in Grapevine likely won’t welcome him back with open arms, he remains optimistic that he can find a second chance elsewhere. According to the New York Post, his wife, Keana Jones, has also stood by him, describing him as a sweet boy.
For now, the impact of his situation isn’t lost on him. He mentioned that he has even encountered the very dish that led to his downfall while serving time. “There was just one time they did serve mac & cheese here. The irony of it all,” he noted.
As he waits to finish his sentence, he is focused on the hope that he can show the world he is worth a second chance, even if his path back to the kitchen is a long one. It’s a strange end to a seven-year career, but it serves as a reminder of how quickly a bad decision can change the trajectory of your life.
